Noschese wins election; former councilman reclaims the seat he previously vacated

Published: Wednesday, June 27, 2012 6:35 PM CDT
The runoff election for Place No. 5 on the Mesquite City Council ended Saturday, June 23, with a familiar face claiming victory. Greg Noschese defeated incumbent Brian Hutcheson with 57.13 percent of the votes.

“I was very excited to earn the voter’s confidence and very relieved that an extended election process had finally come to an end. Given the redistricting at the state and federal level we have asked a lot of voters, and there are still more runoffs this summer. At this point, the voters are more fatigued than the candidates. After all, there are only so many robo-calls one should have to endure. But voting is an important part of our constitutional process and I am grateful and proud that of all the Dallas County cities, Mesquite boasted the highest turnout,” Noschese said. “I also want to thank deputy mayor pro tem Brian Hutcheson and his family for his gracious call Saturday night and the numerous sacrifices he has made to serve our community.”

Noschese is a former councilmember that initially resigned the position to pursue the Republican nomination for the state house. Noschese was defeated in the Republican primary by current state representative Cindy Burkett.

Noschese has served on the Mesquite Quality of Life Corporation board, the Mesquite Education foundation board and also the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce board.

Noschese and Hutcheson were forced into the runoff after neither could secure the required votes to win the council seat outright during the joint election in May.

Noschese said he plans to absorb information about what has changed within the city when he first takes office.

“I will spend some time learning from staff what has changed since I left the council. But even during that process, I plan to focus on ways to enhance our neighborhoods, preserve our safety and crackdown on poorly maintained rental properties. Additionally, I want to encourage my council colleagues to invest more time and effort in business retention and recruitment and finally, I want to ensure that folks continue to maintain confidence in the council and city staff,” Noschese said.

One of the first things Noschese will be faced with is making decisions on the city’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

“During the budget process, I will continue to focus on that principle that guided me during my previous council tenure – can we make government smaller and still deliver the services the citizens demand. Naturally, I will probably have some specific items I will question but until I see the draft budget, hear the staff presentations and hear from constituents, it is difficult to predict exactly what may raise my curiosity or my blood pressure,” Noschese said.
