MISD succeeds at local, state, national fine arts competitions

McKinney ISD students made the district proud during the 2011-2012 school year in fine arts competition.
Roy Renzenbrink, McKinney ISD director of fine arts, gave a report Tuesday night to the school board about notable accomplishments of high school and middle school students in band, orchestra, choir, visual arts and other competitions throughout the year.
"All three high school bands received first division ratings at Region in UIL marching competition," Renzenbrink said. "McKinney High School and McKinney North High School advanced to Area. MHS advanced to finals at Area and missed going to State by one point."
Three McKinney students were given All-State Choir honors, including two from McKinney Boyd and one from McKinney North.
In UIL One Act Play competition, all three McKinney high schools and all five McKinney middle schools received superior ratings at Region. McKinney Boyd received Superior ratings in Region and Area competitions.
Also in TMEA competitions, 53 McKinney band students were named to the Region 25 All-Region Band, 28 McKinney high school choir students were named to the Region 25 All-Region Choir, and 10 McKinney high school orchestra students made the Region 25 All-Region Orchestra.
In TMEA middle school band, orchestra and choir competitions, 65 McKinney band students made the Region 25 All-Region Band, 34 McKinney choir students were named to the Region 25 All-Region Choir, and 14 McKinney orchestra students received Region 25 All-Region honors.
Those from McKinney high schools who advanced in TMEA Area C competition included 28 band students, 22 choir students and five orchestra students.
Students from McKinney high schools and middle schools also did well in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) competition. Three students, including two from McKinney Boyd and one from McKinney High, qualified for State honors and received first division ratings in State competition.
A total of 140 high school students from McKinney participated in the event, including 74 who received first division ratings, 38 with second division ratings and 28 with third division ratings.
Also, 245 students from McKinney middle schools participated in Junior VASE competitions, including 158 who received first division ratings, 63 with second division ratings and 24 with third division ratings.
Renzenbrink also noted that the Faubion Middle School Symphonic Band finished ninth in the state and is one of three middle school bands in the world selected to perform December at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
"This is one of the highest honors given to any band in the nation," Renzenbrink said, adding that the band members are now holding fundraisers to pay for their trip to Chicago.
