A walk/run to remember: Race for the Cure set for Saturday

Thousands of breast cancer survivors and supporters are lacing up for the Susan G. Komen North Texas Plano Race for the Cure on Saturday, June 9. The 22nd annual event will take place at the Plano campuses of Hewlett Packard and The Campus at Legacy.
So far, more than 4,000 people, making up more than 200 teams, have signed up for the Plano race.
"We are so appreciative of the racers, volunteers, donors and sponsors that have come together for the 22nd Annual Plano Race for the Cure," said Mary Frances Hoover, executive director of Komen North Texas. "This event helps pay for life-saving breast health programs in our eight-county service area. We are paying for mammography, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments for vulnerable North Texans. We're fighting breast cancer on all fronts, because everyone deserves a lifetime."
Of the funds Komen North Texas raises, 75 percent is invested in North Texas. The remaining 25 percent goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund scientific research. This year, Komen North Texas granted a total of $750,000 for local breast health services to the Bridge Breast Network, the Grayson County Health Department, Moncrief Cancer Institute and the YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas.
"As I look back over the more than 25 years since I founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure, I am amazed at our accomplishments," Brinker said on the organization's website. "What began as a promise to my dying sister, Susan G. Komen, has evolved into the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures."
Online registration at www.komennorthtexas.org is available for participants who will Walk, Run or Sleep-In for the Cure, and is open until 5 p.m. June 8. Sleep In for the Cure participants race "in absentia," and will receive a participant T-shirt and a pink ribbon blanket. On-site registration for walkers and runners is also open from 6 to 7:45 a.m. on race day.
The event also features the Tom Thumb-sponsored Kids for the Cure activity area and 50-yard dash, the Elizabeth's Garden tribute area, grantee health fair, sponsor expo and Komen pink ribbon boutique. Little supporters 12 months of age and younger can be registered for the Babies for the Cure program to receive a specially designed Race for the Cure-themed feeding bib.
The organization hopes to raise $300,000 from the Plano race, which is just one of the 125 such events held annually in the U.S., with another 10 races held internationally.
The very first Race for the Cure took place in Dallas 30 years ago, where the organization is headquartered and whose race this year is scheduled for Oct. 20.
The North Texas affiliate also conducts the Race for the Cure in Denton. The second annual Denton race will take place on Sept. 29 at South Lakes Park.
Some of the programs these races provide for are breast health services for indigent North Texans, including education, mammograms, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The event also helps fund breakthrough scientific research.
"We began the global breast cancer movement with $200 and a shoebox full of names in my living room in 1982," Brinker said. "We have since built a global community of scientists, advocates, neighbors and friends, working together to make this disease a distant memory."
This year's race will start with Sunny Sinclair, former contestant on Season 12 of The Biggest Loser, and this year's Honorary Plano Race Chair. The Frisco wife, mother and elementary school teacher will also run in the Competitive 5K with her personal Race team, Sunny's Runners.
Team New Balance Honorary Member, Carla Guthrie will lead the procession of approximately 800 breast cancer survivors to the Survivor Celebration and Awards Ceremony after the race. The ceremony will recognize sponsors and include prizes for fastest runners, largest teams and most creative team T-shirt design.
Race day volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups are still available, and can be found in the volunteer section of www.komenorthtexas.org.
