Memorial Day events

The following is a list of Memorial Day events in markets served by Star Local News. Unless otherwise noted, all events will occur on Monday, May 28.
Allen
Ridgeview Memorial Park, 2525 Central Expressway, will host a Memorial Day event at 1 p.m. Veterans from Collin County Freedom Fighters and VFW Lone Star Post 2150 will be on hand to honor the men and women of America's Armed Forces. Special recognition will be given to the 10 veterans killed in Vietnam and Iraq who are buried at the cemetery. The keynote address will be given by William "Bill" Dvorak, a navy aviator and flight instructor who served as the Fairview Municipal Court judge from 1994-2004.
Celina
The Celina Area Heritage Association will hold Celebrate Freedom at 9 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Celina. Holocaust survivor Mike Jacobs is the speaker. In 1939 when he was 14, Mike Jacobs was deported to a Nazi concentration camp where he remained until he was liberated on May 5, 1945.
After the program at the First Baptist Church everyone will adjourn to the Celina Area Heritage Museum for refreshments. Jacobs will sign copies of his book, "Holocaust Survivor: Mike Jacobs' Triumph over Tragedy."
Everyone is invited to attend the program. Attendees are also invited to visit Celina's veterans' memorial that honors Celina veterans that have been killed in action. The memorial is on the square in Celina just a block from the museum.
Coppell
Rolling Oaks Memorial Center, 400 S. Freeport Parkway, will host a Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. to honor military veterans and their service to the United States. The keynote speaker will be Col. Ronald P. Forest, a 30-year Army veteran.
Flower Mound
The city has no special events planned for Memorial Day, but a memorial is located at Jake's Hilltop Park, 4975 Timber Creek Road.
Frisco
Frisco will hold a Memorial Day service beginning at 9 a.m. at Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Road. The event will feature music from the Frisco Chorale and Frisco Community Band, as well as a keynote speech from U.S. Air Force Reserve Chaplain Maj. Amy Hunt. The event is sponsored by the city of Frisco, the Frisco Garden Club and VFW Post 8273.
Highland Village
No special events are planned in Highland Village, but the city does have a Veteran's Monument and Veteran's Memorial on the south side of the Municipal Complex, 1000 Highland Village Road. The Monument honors each branch of the military and the Memorial honors fallen veterans.
Lewisville
Local scouts will raise and lower the city's flags in front of City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, at 8 a.m., then walk to the Veterans Memorial on the City Hall grounds. Following the flag raising, VFW Post 9168 will hold its annual remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Old Hall Cemetery on McGee Lane. A bugler will play taps at this more formal gathering. Immediately after the observance, VFW members invite the public to join them at the VFW Hall, 997 E. State Highway 121, for a hot dog lunch.
Little Elm
Living Word Baptist Church will be hosting a Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 27, at the church, 2315 FM 720. The service will include honoring veterans as well as one veteran who was in General George S. Patton's army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
All branches of the service will be recognized during a flag ceremony by the Little Elm American Legion Post 182. Later that day at 4:30 p.m., the church will host "Chillin' and Grillin'," and outdoor event with games, hamburgers and hotdogs.
The Little Elm American Legion Post 182 has a memorial outside of the Little Elm Town Hall for veterans. Plaques commemorating veterans will be installed on the memorial in the near future.
The Town of Little Elm is currently building the Veterans Memorial Bridge on Witt Road, just south of Brent Elementary. The new $5 million dollar bridge is funded through an 80 percent matching grant from the Regional Toll Revenues and 20 percent from Denton County's Trip '08 Bond Funds.
McKinney
The Pecan Grove Memorial Day ceremony will take place at Pecan Grove Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson, a former prisoner of war during Vietnam, will be on hand to present a posthumous Prisoner of War Medal to the family of Lt. Robert B. Fleming, a veteran who served in World War II and endured captivity as a prisoner of war after his plane went down in Germany. Fleming's son will accept the medal on his father's behalf.
Plano
A ceremony will be held at Plano Veteran's Memorial Park at 7 p.m. The park is located at 2101 Bay Hill Drive, just south of the intersection of Custer Road and West Spring Creek Parkway. U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson will be on hand to present the Purple Heart to David "Cody" Morton, who was injured while serving in Afghanistan. The event is sponsored by the Blue Star Mothers Lone Star Chapter 6, American Legion Post 321 and VFW Post 4380.
Rowlett
The city of Rowlett will host a Memorial Day celebration beginning at 10 a.m. at Veteran's Park, adjacent to the library at 3900 Main Street. The Rowlett Police and Fire Honor Guard will present the flag for the ceremony, which will honor men and women who gave their lives to protect America's freedom.
Southlake
No special Memorial Day events are being held in the city, but dozens of flags will be set up around Town Square to honor the men and women who were killed serving their country.
Sunnyvale
Texas Regional Medical Center at Sunnyvale is a title sponsor of Berean BLAST!, the annual Memorial Weekend fireworks extravaganza presented by Sunnyvale's Berean Baptist Church.
Festivities to honor fallen soldiers and celebrate community will be from 6-10 p.m. Sunday, May 27, at Sunnyvale's Town Center Park, 356 Tripp Road. The celebration will include Christian music by the group FourTwelve and a performance by The Dallas Praise Orchestra & Jazz Band; in addition, the celebration will include vendors, children's activities and fireworks presented by Extreme Pyrotechnics.
New this year, Berean BLAST! will include a food and clothing drive to benefit Sharing Life Community Outreach in Mesquite. The agency provides a range of services to those in need, including food, clothing and household items; financial assistance for housing and utilities; literacy and computer training and programs to address addictions.There is no admission charge. This is the event's sixth year and more than 1,800 people are expected to attend.
The Colony
Five Star Park in The Colony, 4100 Blair Oaks Drive, is home to a veteran's memorial featuring 1,251 bricks engraved with the names of veterans. The memorial was dedicated in 2000, and there are six plaques posted around the site recognizing each branch of the Armed Forces including the Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines.
American Legion Holley-Riddle Post 21 will be hosting a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at the memorial. A portion of the service includes the reading of the names of veterans who have passed away. Historically, those names have been limited to those veterans who were members of the local American Legion Post. This year, organizers are hoping to expand the list to include the names of any veterans from The Colony. Anyone wishing to have the name of a veteran read aloud during the service is asked to email the name, rank, and branch of service to American Legion Post Commander Mike Miller at wingrider05@sbcglobal.net.
