Another week, another fire

For the third straight week, The Colony firefighters have put their skills to the test facing a significant residential structure fire.

At about 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, a major structure fire was reported in the 6600 block of Stewart Boulevard. Fire Chief Scott Thompson said crews arrived on the scene to find a working fire which had started in the back of the home and extended up the wall into the attic.

"When the units arrived there was heavy fire in the backside of the house and in the attic," he said, adding that the fire was soon upgraded to a two-alarm incident. However, "[firefighters] were able to get in pretty quick and knock it down."

Not before significant damage was done to the attic and living area of the house, he said. The family, which was home at the time of the incident, is receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

No injuries were reported.

Thompson said the exact cause of the fire is undetermined but that it appears accidental. TCFD investigators have ruled out potential electrical causes and the chance it was caused by chemicals or flammable liquids.

"Because none of that was around, we secured [the scene] and turned the investigation over to the insurance company," he said.

Firefighters were called to the same home on Sunday afternoon when the blaze rekindled because of embers in the attic. The fire was quickly extinguished, Thompson said.

Another, smaller fire was reported on Larner the morning of June 19 but it was contained to the home's heating and air-conditioning unit and did not result in any damage.

On June 6, TCFD responded to a structure fire on Brentwood Lane that was caused by a lightning strike. On June 13, units were called to a major fire at a home on Aztec that was caused by cooking and took the life of the homeowners' pet cat.

"It's been busy. We went for a while without any major fires then we've had these three in a relatively short period of time," Thompson said. "(But) there's no correlation."

With the summer weather heating up, Thompson said there's a greater chance for firefighters to suffer heat exhaustion during such incidents so first-responders are more likely to quickly call for backup. "The heat dictates calling for help a lot earlier," he said.
