A woofing good time in Mesquite

Dog lover’s, grab your leashes and get your dogs ready.

The city of Mesquite has an event for you and your pooch to attend. The city has been celebrating its 125th birthday all year long and has decided to host an event for animal lovers.

Historic Mesquite Inc. and the Mesquite Animal Shelter have teamed up to host the Bark of July. The event is designed to be something that the whole family, including the family pet, can take part in. The Bark of July will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 14, at Opal Lawrence Historical Park, 701 E. Kearney Street.

“We are doing a series of events for the city’s Quasquicentennial and we thought this would be something significantly different,” said Sandy LeClave, event coordinator and Historic Mesquite board member. “When we planned the events we wanted to try and reach a variety of different people. There were a lot of us on the board that are animal lovers and this seemed like a good idea when we were trying to find things that had never been done.”

LeClave said that the board hopes that everyone that attends will learn something about the city’s history while at the event.

“They can come tour the property with their pet. A lot of people I suspect aren’t aware of what all we have there,” LeClave said. “They may not be able to go inside the house with their pet and look around but maybe they will bring the family back another time and do so.”

The event will feature an owner and dog look-alike contest, a most patriotic pooch contest and crazy canine tricks. There will also be other activities for the family to enjoy.

“We are still working out all the details on the contest but there will be prizes awarded,” LeClave said. “This event will be a time for dogs to mingle on the walking trail and we will have information booths set up by different vendors for people that own animals.”

All participants need is a canine companion, a leash and a need to mingle with other dog lovers. All dogs must have current shot records to participate.

“Everyone must have their shot records with them. We will also be posting a registration form on our website,” LeClave said.

Rules and forms for the contests are available at www.cityofmesquite.com/historicmesquite. For information on the event, call 972-216-6468.
