Early voting ends Friday in primary elections

Published: Wednesday, May 23, 2012 3:11 PM CDT
With two days left in early voting for the Republican and Democratic primaries, voter turnout has been extremely low. Polls are open today and Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Election Day is May 29, with polls once again open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Turnout was expected to be lower since Mitt Romney sealed the Republican presidential nomination well in advance of early voting. So far, the numbers bear this out, with a sharp voter turnout decrease from 2008, when both parties still had contested presidential nominations.

Of the 433,000 registered voters in Collin County, about 3.9 percent have turned out to vote in either primary through May 22, down from a combined 17 percent who voted early in 2008. With all Collin County offices currently held by Republicans, and Democrats not fielding candidates in the majority of the contests, voter turnout has been much higher among Republicans. Through Tuesday, 15,045 people have voted in the Republican Primary, compared to only 1,789 in the Democratic Primary.

Turnout is even lower in neighboring Denton County, where only about 3 percent of all registered voters have cast ballots in one of the two primaries.

Of the four state House districts which encompass part of Plano, District 67 and District 106 are the only two with contested races.

Five Republicans are seeking the District 67 nomination. They include former Plano Mayor Jeran Akers, Richardson CFO Roger Burns, Plano businessman Jon Cole, Plano attorney Jeff Leach and Plano dentist John Pitchford.

In District 106, which includes the Denton County portion of Plano, Frisco City Councilman Pat Fallon is challenging former Lewisville ISD Trustee Amber Fulton.

No Democrats have filed to run for either house seat. The same can be said for U.S. House District 3, where long-time incumbent Sam Johnson is being challenged in the Republican primary by retired airline captain Harry Pierce and software engineering manager Josh Caesar.

During the early voting period, Collin County voters may vote at any location in the county. Plano voters who reside in Denton County may vote at any early voting location in that county.
