Little Elm Adult Literacy Program recognizes students, volunteers

Both students and volunteers of the Little Elm Adult Literacy Program were recognized on June 28 at the Volunteer and Student Recognition Dinner. The Little Elm American Legion Post 182 served fried catfish for dinner.


The Little Elm Friends of the Library offers free English as a Second Language classes and Adult Basic Literacy Classes for those 18 years of age and older through the program. It is run on a volunteer-basis through teachers, class space and student books.

"We are so proud to sponsor this program," said Karyn Hixson, Little Elm Friends of the Library president.


At the dinner, Program Coordinator Diana Russell welcomed those attending the dinner, which included students and their families, city officials and volunteers with the program. Tony Chrisman, Little Elm staff representative, recognized sponsors and former and current city officials and council members attending the dinner.

"I'm very impressed by the students who are very busy take time out of their day to take these classes," Chrisman said.

Both mayors from Little Elm and Oak Point also attended the dinner and gave their remarks about the program and its impact.

"This brings so much value to the town," Little Elm Mayor David Hillock said.

Oak Point Mayor Jim Wohletz expressed how impressed he is with the program.

"It's a tremendous accomplishment and I'm very, very proud," Wohletz said.

Hixson and Russell presented certificates to students for achievements in the classes. Reading students who received certificates included Beatriz Islas and Susan Smith.

ESL class certificates for meeting the Three Challenges, which covered spelling, grammar and written English, were presented to Carlos Martinez, Digma Roxana Moreno, Gilberta Mejorado, Margarita Escobedo, Maria Martinez, Mercedes Martinez, Rosalinda Sauceda and Victor Martinez.

Certificates given to students for completing ESL Class Level One included Arif Ahmed Mohamed, Carlos Martinez, Digma Roxana Moreno, Gilberta Mejorado, Margarita Escobedo, M'Hammed Lehboub, Maria Martinez, Mercedes Martinez, Rosalinday Sauceda and Victor Martinez.

One student, Mercedes Martinez, was recognized for having the highest overall grade in the class. As the student speaker of the dinner, Martinez gave a prepared speech to the guests.

"Learning English was my dream," Martinez said. "Thank you to all you teachers. English is hard, but my English is much better."

Little Elm Public Library Director Spencer Smith presented certificates of appreciation to volunteers. He recognized Ardell Ferguson, Rita Averitte, Delmar Yingst, Tina Hager, Kim Majestic, Tammy Woodrum, Bill Graham, Daniel Garcia, Gayle Wilson, Joanne Nevils, Stephanie Buchanan, Thomasina DeSouza, Hixson and Russell.

Certificates of Appreciation were given to Baskin Robbins, Little Elm American Legion Post 182, Button Memorial United Methodist Church, Living Word Baptist Church, the Town of Little Elm, the Little Elm Public Library and the Little Elm Journal.
