Chamber trying its hand at Texas Hold’em

Published: Monday, July 9, 2012 2:04 PM CDT
The Rowlett Chamber of Commerce annually hosts fundraisers to help fund its various programs. The fundraisers serve as the primary source of funding for the chamber. This year the chamber has added another fundraiser to its lineup.

“We are hosting our first ever Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament,” said Diane Lemmons, chamber president.

The tournament will be held at the Rowlett Bowlarama, 5021 Lakeview Parkway.

“The bowling alley is one of our member businesses. They have done these poker tournaments for several other nonprofit groups. We don’t have a summer fundraising event so we figured we would give this a try,” Lemmons said. “We don’t need to make a lot of money from our fundraiser. We just need to be able to support ourselves.”

The chamber uses its activities to try and get area businesses to do business with each other. Part of their strategy is scheduling different events at different times during the week and month to allow each business owner the opportunity to participate at some point.

“We have seen an uptick in our memberships recently. The turnpike and DART are going to bring new commerce to the city because now Rowlett has become a destination,” Lemmons said.

She is hoping the poker tournament will draw around 100 people but is unsure what the response will be since it is their first time to have the event.

“I would like to see 100 people but since this is our first time I think 50 maybe more realistic. It is really hard to gauge how well this will go since we have not done it before,” Lemmons said. “This is just another addition to our fundraising efforts.”

The poker tournament is open to the general public. There is a $50 buy-in fee. The tournament pays out to the top three finishers.

“There is a 65 percent payout of the money collected, with the chamber receiving the other 35 percent,” Lemmons said.

Each player will receive 3000 chips for their $50 buy-In. You are eliminated from the tourney when you lose all your chips. The tournament will not stop, except for official breaks, until one player holds all the chips. That player will be declared the first place finisher.

The tournament blinds will increase every 15 minutes. They start off at 25/50 then 50/100, 100/200 and then a 10 minute break. Following the 10 minute break the blinds will be 200/400, 300/600, 500/1000 and then a five minute break. Following the break they increase to 1000/2000 and 2000/5000, if needed. If you go out during the first half (before official break) before the ending of 100/200 blinds of the tournament you may ‘rebuy’ one time which means you pay $25 and receive 3000 chips.

If you have reserved a seat but do not show up in time, you will be assigned a seat and chips. Your blinds will be posted in your absence. You must arrive before the first hand of the second blind is dealt.

Seating for the tournament is limited. To sign up, contact Louise Brown at louisebrown@rowlettchamber.com or by calling 972-475-3200.
