Mesquite Heritage Trail entering final design phase
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
Mesquite is heavily in the design phase for its hike and bike trail system.
“This is another amenity that will add to the value of Mesquite,” said Dennis Tarpley, Mayor pro tem. “This will bring in individuals from outside of the city.”
The first segment of the system, or the spine as city officials call it, will extend from the DART bus terminal in Garland to the Town Center / Town East Intersection. This segment will be called Mesquite Heritage Trail and include three trailheads. The project is part of a master hike and bike trail master plan that was developed in 2008. Once the project is fully completed the project will connect more than 100 miles of trails across the area.
Holzapfel said the project will have a south terminus near the Saltgrass restaurant on Town Centre Drive. From there is runs north along the Oncor right of way to I-30. When it reaches I-30 it crosses the freeway at Northwest Drive and passes the golf course as it makes its way to the northern terminus near the Garland bus terminal.
The first phase of the project includes three trailheads. One of the trailheads is on Towne Center Drive, just north of Poteet Drive.
“The city had a piece of land there donated,” Holzapfel said.
The other two trailheads are at the intersection of Towne East Blvd. and Town Centre Drive and the final one at Palos Verdes Park.
To complete the project the city is using grant funds to pay for the majority of the project. The total cost for the project is $4.695 million. The city will be responsible for 20 percent of the cost ($1.113 million) with the North Council of Governments picking up the remaining $3.582 million.
“The grant is from RTC funds from selling the toll rights to U.S. 121,” Holzapfel said.
He said the city is still negotiating a licensing agreement with Oncor to use their right of way to complete the project.
“We hope to go out to bid in early fall once a license agreement is done,” Holzapfel said.
