Offensive breakthrough: FC Dallas blanks Portland, 5-0

Published: Monday, July 23, 2012 3:37 PM CDT
FRISCO – With midfielder Brek Shea nowhere to be found during Saturday night’s game against the Timbers, FC Dallas demolished Portland for a 5-0 victory at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco.

Jackson assisted on two goals and scored one of his own in the contest to give Dallas its second win in three games and its ninth point in the last six outings.

“Every player on the field worked on both sides of the ball,” said Schellas Hyndman, FC Dallas head coach.

Portland got the first scoring opportunity in the match during the ninth minute when forward Mike Fucito cut inside from the right wing and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and off the left goal post.

It was all downhill from there for Portland though, as FC Dallas dominated the remainder of the game to go ahead 2-0 at the half and eventually come away with a five-goal victory.

That dominance led to an FC Dallas goal in the 16th minute on a self-inflicted score that saw Hanyer Mosquera knock a shot into his own net after a cross from defenseman Jair Benitez was redirected past goalie Troy Perkins and inside the left post.

The pass was intended for a charging Jackson, but saw Mosquera slide in front of the pathway and inadvertently knock the ball into his own goal.

“Tonight seemed to be a game we were able to put pressure on Portland from the start,” Hyndman said.

Dallas then took a commanding first-half lead in the 26th minute when midfielder Andrew Jacobson notched his first goal of the season and just the second of his 89-game MLS career on a back pass from defenseman Zach Loyd.

After receiving the pass, Jacobson drilled a shot from 20-yards out that flew past Perkins and into the net to put Dallas ahead by two goals.

“What you saw tonight is a team that was willing to put everything on the line,” Hyndman said.

Dallas would maintain the two-goal lead until the break, heading into the locker room with better than a 63-percent possession rate.

It didn’t take long for FC Dallas to continue its scoring spree in the second half.

Jackson scored his second goal of the season in the 48th minute when a shot deflected off Portland’s Mamadou Danso and past Perkins for a 3-0 Dallas lead.

Jackson continued his dominance later in the game, assisting on a Scott Sealy goal in the 69th minute and a score from Ruben Luna in the 81st minute.

“[Jackson] has worked so hard since he’s been back,” Hyndman said.

Sealy’s goal was his first since 2008 and came on a lead pass from Jackson that gave Sealy a good look from 15-yards out that eventually made its way inside the right post for a 4-0 lead.

The 20-yard-old Luna then converted another Jackson pass in the late going for an easy redirect goal, his second career MLS score, to complete the offense for Dallas.

“Obviously the end result is fantastic,” Hyndman said. “It’s something we’ve been wanting.”

With Dallas dominating possession time, Hartman needed to make just one save on the night, recording his fourth shutout of the season.

The victory was the second in three games for Dallas (5-10-7) after failing to record a win in 13 straight games (0-7-6). The five goals were also the first time Dallas has scored at least three goals in any game this season.

The Timbers (5-11-4) picked up their fourth straight loss and third since general manager Gavin Wilkinson took over coaching duties from John Spencer on July 9. Portland is now winless in 10 road games (0-8-2) while being outscored by 18 goals in that stretch and having gone a league record 697 minutes without a road goal.

Dallas will now turn its attention to the Los Angeles Galaxy, who they host for a 7 p.m. Saturday contest at FC Dallas Stadium.
