Flower Mound to conduct mosquito control spraying

Published: Thursday, July 26, 2012 6:10 PM CDT
The Texas Department of State Health Services recently informed the town of Flower Mound that mosquito samples collected near the following areas have tested positive for carrying the West Nile virus: 2600 block College Parkway; 1900 block Doubletree; 4200 block Crescent; 4300 block Native Oak, and the intersection of Bruton Orand and Quail Run.

The town will conduct spraying operations in the approximate one-half square-mile radius surrounding the specified areas between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Friday through Monday.

Spraying operations may be rescheduled to the evening of Tuesday if weather conditions are not suitable. Residents in the affected neighborhoods will be notified with community signs placed at major intersections within the spraying area, and are advised to minimize exposure when possible.

The following precautionary steps are also advisable:

Stay indoors during spraying events if possible

If outside or in a vehicle during this time, be alert for the spraying truck and maintain a safe distance

If the spray should contact skin or eyes, wash skin with soap and water, and rinse eyes with water or saline solution

Close windows

Wash exposed fruits and vegetables before eating

There are no special precautions or waiting period recommendations for swimming pools as a result of the spraying. The town staff will continue to conduct additional inspections and monitor the area after treatment.

The insecticide used in spraying is applied at ultra-low levels, breaks down quickly, and does not leave a toxic residue. Flower Mound Environmental Services responds to all mosquito concerns with an inspection of the area, larvicidal treatment of any potential mosquito breeding areas, and increased efforts to eliminate areas of standing water.
