The MAC keeps rolling out art: Artists get chance to showcase their abilities at arts center

The Mesquite Arts Center is buzzing with activities for citizens to take advantage to close out the month of July and into August.
The Pied Piper
The arts center has a bunch of children frantically memorizing lines and preparing for their two performances of The Pied Piper on Saturday, July 28. The performances are part of the Missoula Children’s Theatre, a camp designed to give aspiring actors and actresses a chance to hone their craft while on summer break from school.
The kids are mostly amateurs that have had no prior preparation for what they have been through as part of the camp. The cast will be headlined by 12-year-old Madeline Keheley as the pied piper. She is the daughter of parks and recreation director Cliff Keheley.
“They really are an impressive group of kids,” Flores said.
The children will have two shows on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m. and 5:50 p.m. the cost to attend is $10 per person. Tickets for the show usually sell out fast, according to Flores.
“I recommend getting tickets in advance thorough our website,” Flores said.
The Topa, Tx Chili Cookoff
The arts center also has the Mesquite Community Theater preparing for its production of the Topa, Tx Chili Cookoff, which is scheduled for Aug. 17- Sept. 1. The play is being directed by the playwright himself, Kevin Paris. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students.
“It’s really such a coup for the community theater to be working with the playwright himself on his own production,” Flores said.
Art exhibit
The arts center will have an art exhibit from the Mesquite Creative Arts Club in its gallery from Aug. 5 to 30. The group will display its landscapes and abstracts.
“The arts club meets here once a month on a Monday where they are introduced to a new technique. They are dedicated to educating adults that are interested in art. They host two shows per year in our gallery,” Flores said.
Flores added that the group also helps the MISD students that have their art on display at the center once a year to continue to develop their artistic ability.
“They really are a bunch of people that are interested in the visual arts and are willing to take the time to learn and educate others,” Flores said.
