SPAN, Inc. wins 2011 Non-Profit of the Year Award at annual Unity in Community Lunch
The Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce (LACC), Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce and Highland Village Business Association are proud to host the luncheon through United Community Bank’s sponsorship. “United Community Bank was pleased to sponsor the Unity in Community luncheon again this year,” said Gary Lewis, President and CEO of United Community Bank, “This is an excellent way to showcase several of our non-profits in the Southern Denton County area. These non-profits are the reason we live and work in a caring community. They all serve valid needs when people need extra help and encouragement. Our UCB employees have served on many of the non-profit Boards and would encourage others to visit their offices anytime.”
This year’s finalists included The Salvation Army and Denton County Friends of the Family. The luncheon was attended by a record number of Chamber members, local nonprofit representatives, and supportive community advocates. “This award provides us the opportunity to take time and recognize the non-profit that has truly gone above and beyond this past year,” said LACC President Matt McCormick, “We are a community that is blessed to be called home by many worthy nonprofits, and we welcome the opportunity to not only recognize them but celebrate their accomplishments.”
The annual luncheon offers all charitable non-profits the opportunity to attend the lunch at no cost, thanks to the Lewisville Noon Rotary and Flower Mound Rotary Clubs, and exhibit information about their organizations before and after the lunch at an expo. Past award recipients include Christian Community Action, CASA, Children’s Advocacy Center of Denton County, Pedi Place, and Communities in Schools of North Texas.
“Given the caliber of non-profits serving southern Denton County, we are truly honored to be named the Unity in Communities 2011 Non-Profit of the Year,” said SPAN, Inc.’s Executive Director Deb Robertson, adding “We greatly appreciate the on-going support of the business community and look forward to continuing partnerships that work to improve the quality of life in Denton County.”
SPAN, Inc. was established in 1974 with the goal that seniors will be able to remain in their own home longer as they live independently and participate more fully in local community life. Currently SPAN’s programs include Meals on Wheels, congregate (group) lunches for seniors at 6 senior centers, nutrition education and transportation services. They also have a Senior Paws program, providing pet food to Meals on Wheels participants who might otherwise be inclined to share their hot lunch with pets when they are unable to afford pet food. Last year they delivered over 68,000 hot, noontime meals to over 500 clients in Denton County.
