Two new cases of West Nile virus discovered in Plano

Published: Monday, July 30, 2012 4:47 PM CDT
Two more Plano residents have been diagnosed with West Nile virus, bringing the total number of human cases in Collin County to eight.

In addition to the four Plano cases, three Allen residents and one Frisco resident have tested positive, said Peggy Wittie, Collin County chief epidemiologist.

The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and passed along to humans via bites from infected insects. The disease is typically not fatal, but five deaths have been linked to the disease so far this year in Dallas County.

The third Plano case occurred in the 75075 zip code in an area bounded by Plano Parkway, Preston Road, Park Boulevard and Independence Parkway. It is not yet known where the fourth infected resident lives.

The previous two Plano cases were discovered near Plano Senior High and near Los Rios Country Club.

Geoffrey Heinicke, the city's environmental health manager, urged all residents to wear an insect repellant containing DEET. He said it is believed that none of the infected people were wearing insect repellant at the time they were bitten.

The city of Plano is continuing with its mosquito management program, which includes reducing mosquito habitat and using sprays and other insecticides to kill adult mosquitoes and their larvae.
