The Garland Track Club returned home with quite a haul after competing at the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Games of Texas last Thursday through Sunday at the Cabaniss Multi-Purpose Complex in Corpus Christi.
Garland has built a reputation over the years of having one of the largest and most productive teams in the state, and this year was no different, as the team won 20 medals, including six individual gold medals and one relay gold.
Garland showed good balance all the way around, getting contributions from girls and boys in all age divisions, but perhaps the strongest performance came in the 18-and-under boys group.
He then teamed with Kevonte Collier, Tequille Jackson, Rashad Dorsey, Timiree Morris and Desmond Mapps to place second in the 400 relay and joined X'Zavier Cooper, Neiman Reed, Trey Porter and Brandon Moore on the 1,600 relay that won the bronze medal.
Moore also brought home a gold medal after winning the 400 meters in a time of 48.43 seconds.
The athletes in the boys 16-and-under division also had a strong showing, led by Justin Walker, who won the gold medal in the long jump with a mark of 22-03.50.
Devonte Harris finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 44-03, while Devin Duvemay earned silver medals in both the 100 and 200 meters.
Garland's lone relay gold medal was won in the boys 8-and-under division where Cory Redic, Chase Bradfield, Dwight Jones, Zavion Wright and Omarion Perry took first place in the 400 relay in a time of 1:00.70, edging out the Frisco Heat for the victory.
Bradfield added a silver medal in the high jump, while Jones placed third in the 100 meters.
In the boys 14-and-under division, Garland had several races narrowly miss out on the gold medal.
Juan Moreno was first after the preliminaries, but had to settle for the silver medal in the 200 meters. He then joined Kaleb Mcnac, Kobe Morrow and Zhaire Smith on the 400 relay team that took second, just .06 seconds behind the winning team of the Sprinters Club. Mcnac also earned a bronze medal in the 100 meters.
On the girls side, the 14-and-under division led the way. Marian McRae won gold in the high jump by clearing 5-2.
McRae was also part of the 400 relay team along with Johna Diggs, Alysa Morgan and Natalia Ramirez that earned a bronze medal.
Natalie Valentine also took home a medal in this age group, winning a silver in the 100 hurdles.
Bianca Jackson, the Class 5A state champion at the high school meet in May, added another gold medal to her collection by winning the 100 hurdles in 14.24 seconds in the girls 18-and-under group.
Jackson, Laticia Mapps,, Charity Mapps, Theondra Woods, Marquetta Mapps and Joya Thomas narrowly missed the medal stand when they took fourth in the 400 relay.
Rounding out the medal winners for Garland was Valencia Young, who placed third in the 80 hurdles in the girls 10-and-under division.
