KMB seeks to host yard tour, Tour being planned for spring 2013

Published: Friday, August 3, 2012 9:39 AM CDT
Keep Mesquite Beautiful is looking for a few nice looking yards to showcase as part of a yard tour event. The group wants to show people what can be done to make their yards look more appealing.

“I am one of those people that have been on these yard tours other places. When you go on them you get some really good ideas of what you can do with your own yard,” said DKay Porter, a member of Keep Mesquite Beautiful who is organizing the Mesquite garden tour.

KMB currently recognizes residents for their beautification efforts through its yard of the month program. As part of an extension to that program in 2013, Keep Mesquite Beautiful wants to highlight local gardening efforts. The group is planning a yard tour and is looking for input from local residents.

“We want to plan the tour for some time in the early spring after we have had a few good rain showers. It will last two days over a weekend and tickets will be around $10. We will have people available to show participants around the various yards,” Porter said. “We are hoping we get a good variety of yards. We are mainly looking for yards that are attractive and have things people will want to see.”

The summer and current water restrictions have made this year’s landscaping a little more of a challenge, but the group challenges residents to make plans to show their yards next spring.

“When people take good care of their property it makes the whole community look better. We hope that people will go on the tour and see what can be done then go back and do some of them to their yards,” Porter said.

If you or someone you know has a nice looking yard, contact KMB to nominate the yard for participation in the program. To nominate a property for participation, contact the Keep Mesquite Beautiful office at 972-329-8331.

“We are hoping we will have a good response,” Porter said. “Our goal is to make the city a more pleasant place to live. Everything can be improved and it adds to the quality of life in Mesquite.”

KMB representatives will pick five to seven yards to showcase as part of the tour. Participant homes may be large or small, and yards may be lush and green or Smartscape. Self-nominations are also welcome. The Keep Mesquite Beautiful website offers links to local resources for water-wise planting on its website, www.keepmesquitebeautiful.org.
