Man dies swimming on Stewart Creek shore

Published: Tuesday, June 19, 2012 4:08 PM CDT
THE COLONY – A 38-year-old man was reported missing a little before 7 p.m. on Sunday in the water along Stewart Creek Park in The Colony. The man, identified as Billy Ed Jenkins, of Princeton, was located an hour later by the Lewisville Fire Department's rescue dive team about 25 feet from shore and then transported by The Colony Fire Department to Baylor Hospital in Carrollton where he was pronounced dead.

The Colony Police Department spokesman Lt. Darren Brockway said Jenkins is believed to have drowned but that the Denton County Medical Examiner has yet to make an official ruling on the cause of death. Alcohol also is believed to be a factor in the incident, Brockway said.

"[Jenkins] was seen swimming in the designated swimming area and observed to go under and never resurfaced," Brockway said. "Family members and citizens searched the area where he went down and called 9-1-1 after he could not be located."

According to police records, EMS personnel were informed upon arrival that the victim had been missing about 20 minutes before the police were called.

Jenkins’ mother, Barbara, told police that she saw him "walk into the lake and then stumble, and his head went underwater." She did not see him come up out of the water again.

Another witness said she saw Jenkins in the lake and then "suddenly his body went underwater." She saw him come up out of the water two or three times but the last time he did not come up again. It was at that point that family members and other beachgoers began searching the water for him.

Jenkins was on vacation with his family celebrating Father’s Day at the park, according to police records.

Personnel from the Denton County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Game Warden also responded to the scene.
