Celina author Cathy Sagnibene Apple learned a lot while researching her book “The Heard Legacy”

“Don’t put metal paper clips on paper you want to preserve. It damages the paper. That’s one of the things I learned while researching the book,” Apples said.

The board of directors of the Heard-Craig museum in McKinney commissioned Apple to write a history of the Heard family.

She worked on the book for several years and took a break from it when her mother became ill.

“The Heard Legacy” was published in 2011 and tells the story of the Heard family’s journey to McKinney from Arkansas in 1862.

Apple was granted access to many resources including the Heard-Craig family archives, files from the former president of Austin College in Sherman, newspaper clippings; census and genealogy data, resources from the McKinney Public Library and other historical sources.

She even spent time at Austin College studying the correspondence between Kathryn Heard Craig and the former president of Austin College, the late John D. Moseley.

Apple is a freelance writer with C.S. Apple Publishing. She was an editor at Fashion Showcase publication. Her education was at Southern Methodist University and East Texas State University.

The lifelong Celina resident currently serves as president of the Celina Library board of directors.

She said her research occasionally had unforeseen side effects. She once got so engrossed in the historical documents she had been working with in the basement of the museum that the museum closed for the day while she was working.

When she raised her head everything was abnormally silent. When she went upstairs she created an undying memory for the museum attendant who was still working upstairs. She had not been aware that anyone else was still in the building.

The book, “The Heard Legacy” costs $15 and can be purchased through the museum. Call 972-569-6909 or visit www.heardcraig.org.
