Volleyball: Season-long fundraiser for Coppell boys soccer coach Chad Rakestraw's daughter begins with opener
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
On Tuesday, Coppell's volleyball team will begin defense of the Class 5A State Title they claimed in 2011.
But when the Cowgirls take to the court against J.J. Pearce and Bishop Lynch at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively, students and faculty will have more on their mind than just opening the season with a bang.
The doubleheader will also serve as the kickoff to a season-long t-shirt fundraiser for Kamryn Rakestraw -- the 15-month old daughter of Coppell boys soccer head coach Chad Rakestraw -- who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a form of cancer, on May 23.
"We're just keeping the faith and continuing to believe that it will turn out OK and she will ultimately heal," Rakestraw said. "This is how we began our journey and how we are going to continue to approach it."
Rakestraw noted that Kamryn has been responding well to the chemotherapy.
"She's doing really well," he said. "We thank the Lord that he has protected Kamryn from the side effects of the chemo and we are still praying because there are a lot of long-term effects that can come from it."
Cowgirls volleyball will be selling t-shirts throughout the season with all profits going directly to the Rakestraw family to help with medical bills. Shirts can be purchased at the Coppell volleyball concession stand or through volleyball head coach Julie Green (jgreen@coppellisd.com).
"The support has been incredibly humbling," Rakestraw said. "We always talk about having a family atmosphere within the faculty and coaching staff and this just shows it. My co-workers have been incredible with their words of encouragement and what they are doing to help out monetarily."
