College program relocates

IRVING, Texas- Taking advantage of the area’s growing logistics hub, North Lake College will move its Logistics Technology program to its North Campus in Coppell this fall. The program was previously based at the Central Campus in Irving and comprised solely of distance-learning, or online, classes.

“It makes sense logistically, no puns intended, to have this program right where so many companies are that have the need for logistics training,” notes Executive Dean of the North Campus Arthur James. Program Coordinator Dr. Thomas Harrington agrees. “The FedEx supply chain headquarters, Container Store distribution, Aviall Services- they’re all right here,” says Harrington. “We’re moving to the heart of the logistics hub.”

Aviall Services, a Boeing company, is the largest independent aircraft distributor worldwide. In January, Aviall teamed up with North Lake College to offer employees certificate training in logistics. Workforce development, however, is not the only area where the NLC program has seen growth. From veterans retraining in LWIA high growth areas, to line workers advancing into supervisor and managerial roles, online enrollment grew 61 percent last year.

The need for logistics professionals in North Texas continues to grow alongside economic and financial globalization. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, material handling and logistics is one of America's largest and fastest growing industries, employing more than 700,000 workers. To keep up with the industry’s continued expansion, and the college’s increasing enrollment, NLC is welcoming new Logistics Technology faculty member Jeffrey Wendt. Wendt offers over 25 years of experience in the field --a great asset to an already strong team.

“These…professors have provided a program that is, in all respective terms, flawless,” notes student John Srb. “They provide quality knowledge that can actually be applied in the workplace.”
