Olivares takes over at North Mesquite

It didn't take former John Paul II volleyball head coach Sherry Olivares long to get a new job.

Olivares is now head coach at North Mesquite.

Olivares, who has 27 years experience and also coaches club at Summit Volleyball, started the volleyball program at John Paul seven years ago. During that time, she posted a winning record in every season prior to 2011 and led the Lady Cardinals to three straight regional appearances (2008-10).

Olivares was replaced at John Paul by Nicki Gonzalez.

A staple in Plano native Lance Armstrong's organization since 2009, the golf tournament will be held Sept. 23-24 at Gleneagles Country Club.

The festivities commence with a cocktail party Sept. 23 at III Forks Restaurant that will include live and silent auctions. The tournament will be held the following day and includes a round of golf as well as a continental breakfast and buffet luncheon.

The proceeds go to benefit the LIVESTRONG Foundation and Heroes for Children.

Goodloe out, Pryor in at Plano

For the second straight year, Plano Senior is getting a new wrestling head coach.

Clay Goodloe was at the helm for one season, but is departing for the same position at Carrolton Creekview. Ironically enough, Creekview is involved with the Wildcats' new head coach as well as Jay Pryor, who started the Mustangs' program when the school opened, is taking over at Plano.

Pryor was previously the wrestling coach at Sand Springs Public Schools in Sand Springs, Okla.

Burkhead on watch list

Plano Senior alum, and Nebraska senior, Rex Burkhead is on the Doak Walker Award watch list.

The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate running back, with the preseason watch list boasting 52 names up for initial consideration.

Burkhead, a semifinalist for the award in 2011, is coming off a junior campaign with the Cornhuskers where he established career highs across the board. The former Wildcat ran for 1,357 yards and 15 touchdowns in addition to hauling in 21 receptions for 177 yards and two scores.

The winner will be announced Dec. 6.

Burkhead, who won the 2012 Rare Disease Champion Award, is also a nominee for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in part because of his work with 6 year old Jack Hoffman.

UIL steroid testing results

The UIL has released its annual Anabolic Steroid Testing Report for tests conducted between September 2011 and May 2012.

During that span, 3,311 tests were conducted and confirmed nine positive results and two protocol positives, which stem from a student-athlete violating the UIL steroid-testing protocol. One resulted from a student not reporting for testing and one was the result of a substituted specimen.

In addition, 217 schools were tested which included 3,087 boys across 11 sports and 224 girls over 10 sports. The sports with the most tests conducted were football (1,366) and volleyball (30) for boys and girls, respectively.

The testing spanned grade levels 9-12, with 1,045 senior student-athletes topping the scale.

Randle in Under Armour Elite 24

For a second straight year, Prestonwood Christian Academy senior forward Julius Randle has been selected for the Under Armour Elite 24.

The event is at the Venice Beach Courts.

The slam dunk competition (Aug. 24) and game (Aug. 25) will air live at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.

"I'm very happy to be coming back to Elite 24," Randle said. "It was definitely one of my favorite events to play in last year, so I'm happy I get the chance to do it again and hang out with some great players."

The event features the nation's top high school basketball players with selections based on AAU tournaments and national summer camps held by ESPN basketball experts.

As the No. 2 player in the ESPN 100 Class of 2013, Randle fits the bill.

"Julius is very deserving of playing in the Elite 24," said Chris Mayberry, Lions head coach. "He has worked very hard this off-season and I think this is the start of an amazing senior year for Julius here at Prestonwood."

Plano fencers finish Olympic run

Making it to the 2012 London Olympic Games was an incredibly challenging feat for every athlete, regardless of the sport.

Advancing in the competition was even tougher.

Plano-trained athletes Zain Shaito, 21, and Mona Shaito, 18, learned that firsthand as the siblings had a tough run while competing for Lebanon in fencing.

Mona was the more successful of the two.

In women's individual foil, Mona beat Egypt's Shaimaa Elgammal in the first round, 7-6, before falling to Italy's Elisa Di Francisca in the Round of 32. Di Francisca went on to win the gold medal.

Zain lost his opening bracket match in men's individual foil to China's Jun Zhu, 15-2.

Modano to be enshrined in Dallas

Mike Modano's journey to be enshrined into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame will be a short one.

The Allen Americans minority owner, and former Dallas Stars standout, will be inducted into the Class of 2012 on the ice at the Plaza of the Americas in Dallas.

Modano, Lou Lamoriello and Ed Olczyk are being inducted this year.

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is in Eveleth, Minn., but inductions have rotated across cities for several years.

In addition to being a staple of the Minnesota North Stars and then Dallas Stars franchise, Modano is the NHL's American-born leader in goals, points, playoff points and games played.

Owens signs with Seattle

Following a short-lived stint with the Allen Wranglers, Terrell Owens signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old, ex-Wrangler was signed for $925,000 -- the NFL's veteran minimum.

Owens previously served as a player and co-owner for the Wranglers in an IFL career that spanned eight games, during which the wide out recorded 35 catches for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Wranglers released Owens in February, citing his unwillingness to play in a late-season road trip and missing an appearance at a children's hospital.

Owens, entering his 16th NFL season, is second in league history in receiving yards (15,934), fourth in touchdowns (156) and sixth in receptions (1,078).
