City of Frisco to hold second National Night Out event in October

The Frisco Police Department has announced it will hold two National Night Out events this year. Tomorrow's event will go ahead as planned, and the city will also hold an event in October as well.

In a letter to the residents of Frisco, Chief of Police Todd Renshaw said the city is hosting two events because of recent West Nile virus cases in the city. Two Frisco residents have tested posted for West Nile virus during the past three weeks.

"Mother Nature has often thrown a Curveball into National Night Out festivities planning," Renshaw said in the letter. "This year is no different. With the increasing reports of West Nile Virus occurrences, we thought it prudent to take a step back and evaluate the decision to go forward tomorrow night. The last thing we want is for a negative consequence to what is supposed to be a positive activity."

Frisco has traditionally celebrated the event on the national August date even though many cities in the state celebrate the event in October. This year the Texas National Night Out date is Oct. 2, although the city has not decided whether it will hold its second event on that date or another day in October.

From 1994 to 2007 Frisco celebrated National Night Out on the national date in August. In 2008 and 2009 the city moved the event to October, although most neighborhoods canceled their block parties in the latter year because of rain. Since then, however, the city has hosted the event in August.

Following both National Night Out events, the Frisco Police Department will engage in discussions with participating neighborhoods to determine whether to move the event to October in the future.

"We think the solution [this year] is to hold both events, tomorrow night and in October, in order to serve the desires of our citizens," Renshaw said. "Afterwards, I would like for [our] staff to have a hearty discussion with our block captains to determine whether we should move back to the October date or maybe even break from the NNO tradition and move it to a Saturday in a more temperate month and just celebrate in Frisco."

At Monday's city council meeting, Renshaw said the police department has already polled the 65 currently registered block party organizers for their input and will continue to have an ongoing discussion with organizers regarding the event.

"I don't have the numbers yet, but what I'm hoping to do is have a real good conversation with the block captains and make a determination whether we want to stay [in August or move the event]," he said.
