THE COLONY -- Staff members at Stewart Peninsula Golf Course on Cottonwood Springs Drive are scrambling today after vandals wreaked havoc to the course on two separate nights this week.

According to general manager Brandon Clough, vandals smashed seven of the course’s hole signs sometime Wednesday night, causing an estimated $6,000 in damage. Vandals also broke the facility’s main entrance sign into two pieces, which has been cobbled back together temporarily.

The absence of the signs is creating a “huge burden” for staff, Clough said. While regular players of the course would know the number, par, and orientation of each hole, newcomers are missing vital information required to play. Clough said an extra marshal was on the course today to assist golfers as needed.

Overnight on Friday, vandals returned to the course and broke into the cart barn, stealing a golf cart estimated to cost about $4,000. One of the barn’s retractable doors was ripped back and then busted through from the inside in order to get the cart out, Clough said. The course’s head groundskeeper has yet to make a determination on what other damage the facility might have incurred.

Stewart Peninsula GC is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the vandalism at the course. Anyone with information may call The Colony Police Department at 972-625-1887 or 972-625-8273. The number for Stewart Peninsula GC is 972-625-8700.
