Residents can dump trash behind cotton mill May 19

For people who have more junk around the house than they know what to do with, the city of McKinney is offering a solution.

The McKinney Office of Environmental Stewardship (OES), in cooperation with the Storm Water Management Program and Environmental Services, will have dumpsters available from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday behind the McKinney Cotton Mill, located on the old Mill Block at Fowler Street and Burris Street, for people to place broken furniture, recyclables, yard waste and brush.

"This is our second year to host this springtime event," said Jorge Castillo, OES grants coordinator. "Chunk Your Junk was held in conjunction with Texas Trash-Off last year and was a great success. More than 85 tons of trash and one ton of scrap metal were collected during a four-hour time span. The city of McKinney anticipates a great response from the community this year, as well."

Those who bring items to the dumpsters must be McKinney residents and must bring a driver's license and water bill as proof of residency.

Contractors are not invited to bring items to dumpsters, and no construction debris, household hazardous waste or electronic items will be accepted. Household hazardous waste and electronic items can be picked up at residences on regular trash days or through the city's Home Hazardous Waste (HHW) program by calling 972-547-7385.

Residents will be asked to sort their items into three categories: trash, recyclables and yard waste. Recyclable materials, which can be co-mingled or mixed, may include aluminum cans, cardboard, glass, plastics, newspapers, magazines and paper.

Castillo said, "This event provides residents an opportunity to expand their spring cleaning efforts by disposing of unwanted junk from their homes, garages and yards. This is a great time to get rid of broken furniture, old tires or odd size items that will not fit into the residential trash container used for regular trash collection."

He concluded, "As a result of community involvement in the Chunk Your Junk event, McKinney will be a cleaner city."
