Board to discuss options Monday following Knapp’s resignation

Published: Friday, August 3, 2012 4:22 PM CDT
The Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees will spend Monday deciding what its next step will be following the resignation of Place 3 Trustee Jeff Knapp.

Knapp resigned earlier this week after he and his family closed on a new house, which is just outside LISD boundaries. State law requires that members of a school board must live within the respective district.

Knapp said he thought he might be able to stay on the board a little longer, but the entire home buying process happened a lot quicker than he thought it would.

“It was a heart-felt decision that I didn’t take lightly,” Knapp said, adding that the homes his family was interested in within LISD were already sold.

Knapp, who was elected to the board in 2010, said he and the other board members accomplished a lot.

“Honesty, integrity and transparency were the things I ran on during the election,” Knapp said. “Now, every major decision that is made has been out in the open. Transparency is out there, and the community feels like they’re part of the decisions again.”

Monday, the board will have a special meeting to discuss the vacant seat. Because Knapp had less than a year remaining in his term, the district does not have to have a special election. Instead, the board can appoint someone to Place 3, or they can leave it open.

Board President Carol Kyer said there are pros and cons to each scenario.

“If you leave it open, that means that if there is a tie vote, the motion fails,” Kyer said. “So that puts more pressure on the administration. But unless the board has someone specific in mind, it’s hard to fill the seat. Do we go with someone new or someone who already knows about the district?”

Kyer said based on feedback she has received from the community is that they would like the seat filled.

Also Monday, the board will discuss the 2012-13 budget and the tax rate.
