Frisco ISD meets Texas Education Agency standards

Published: Tuesday, August 14, 2012 3:58 PM CDT
The Texas Education Agency released its 2012 adequate yearly progress report on Aug. 8, and Frisco ISD met the agency's standards, although five of the district's 49 schools missed the standards for individual campuses. The report is a federally mandated accountability system that evaluates all public school districts and campuses in the state.

Frisco was part of a small percentage of school districts that met the TEA's standards. Of the 1,175 school districts evaluated, only 312 met the agency's standards for adequate yearly progress in 2012.

In terms of individual campuses, 44 of 49 Frisco ISD schools met performance standards. The remaining five schools only failed one portion of the requirements.

Three schools -- Frisco High School, Wakeland High School and Maus Middle School -- failed mathematics based on performance, and two schools -- Staley Middle School and Bright Elementary School -- failed reading based on performance.

A spokesman for Frisco ISD said the district is pleased with its results but that it will continue to work toward making sure all its schools meet the standards.

"When [the] adequate yearly progress report was rolled out as part of No Child Left Behind in 2003, the established criterion was that 100 percent of students be successful on all tests by 2013-2014, and the intent was to have 100 percent of all students graduate from high school," said Jamie Driskill, assistant director of community relations and marketing for Frisco ISD. "Frisco ISD is proud of all of our schools; we are making gains and teachers are working hard to make certain every student in our district receives the best possible education."

The adequate yearly progress report measures districts and schools on three criteria: reading and English language arts, mathematics, and graduation or attendance rates.

Reading and mathematic measurements are determined by test results from students enrolled in each school district and campus. Performance and participation rates are measured in both tests. This year, 83 percent of a district or school's students were required to pass the math section of the STAAR test to meet mathematic performance standards; 87 percent were required to pass the STARR's reading and English language arts test to meet performance standards in that criterion.

The last criterion is determined by the grades offered by a school district or campus. Frisco's high schools, for instance, are measured by graduation rates, while its other schools are measured by attendance rates.
