LEPD to get eight new ticketwriter devices

Published: Thursday, August 16, 2012 4:16 PM CDT
The Little Elm Police Department was granted its request by the Little Elm Town Council to replace their existing ticketwriters for $19,106.

The current ticketwriters, a device that issue citations electronically and prints a receipt, that the department uses are outdated and can no longer receive software updates. This has caused problems in losing citation information, freezing up and taking more than a week to recover the data in some cases.

"It's the software in them," LEPD Cpt. Leslie Smith said. "They're basically useless because all the data captured on the street, they're not going to go anywhere."

When an officer makes a traffic stop, the ticketwriter scans the driver's license and vehicle identification number and stores the data. Smith said this shortens the time for the officer to stand on the side of the road and prevents mistakes from inputting the data about the driver and vehicle.

"The quicker the traffic stop goes, the better it is for everybody," Smith said.

The current ticketwriters can no longer receive software updates, so when officers dock the handheld devices at the station so the information can sync with the court system, it takes a much longer time to get the information to load.

"The two have to talk," Smith said.

The problems with the ticketwriters, which the department has had for at least five years, have only started occurring within the last few weeks. As of yet, no data on citations and warnings have been lost or have caused problems in the court system.

Replacement ticketwriters were originally supposed to be included in the 2012-13 budget, but the state of the current ones moved that timeline up because of the hindrance they are causing LEPD officers. The new ticketwriters will come out of the Red Light Camera Revenue budget, which is a set of funds set aside from Red Light Camera citations that are used solely for traffic-related issues.

"The funds are available today," Police Chief Waylan Rhodes said to the council Tuesday.

The eight new ticketwriters will be purchased through Brazos Technology, a company based in College Station that provides mobile technology in public safety, education and field service.

"Once we get those in, we'll be back to operating as usual. Right now, it just takes longer," Smith said.
