Registration open for Citizens Police Academy
By Chris Roark, croark@starlocalnews.com
The Flower Mound Police Department is conducting registration for the Citizen Police Academy, which is set for this fall.
The free, 11-week course runs from 7-9:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 6 at the police department, 4150 Kirkpatrick Lane. There is one Saturday class from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The deadline for the application is Aug. 30.
The course begins with an orientation and a tour of the department, providing an overview of several divisions, including patrol and criminal investigations.
Personnel will discuss training, recruiting, dispatch, mental illness and more.
“SWAT day is always huge,” said Officer Justin Buck. “We give a Power Point presentation, discuss qualifications and how to handle the equipment. We have a mock assault on a vehicle and how to clear a building. We do a lot of instruction through scenarios.”
Buck said K9 instruction and range day, where participants use weapons, is also popular.
When participants complete the academy, they can join the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association and are eligible to participate in the Citizens on Patrol volunteer department. There, they can assist the police in such ways as waiting for a tow truck following a crash so that the police can work other calls.
Go to www.flower-mound.com/police, email crime.prevention@flower-mound.com or go to the police department for an application. Applicants must fill out necessary paperwork and are subject to a criminal history and background check.
