The Colony to treat areas for adult mosquitoes

Published: Friday, August 17, 2012 3:56 PM CDT
As the City continues its preventative control efforts to combat West Nile virus, ongoing trapping and testing is taking place on a weekly basis throughout the City. This ongoing testing has resulted in multiple positive pools for West Nile mosquitoes in the following locations:

  • Area north of and including Five Star and Hawaiian Falls, and areas east of Blair Oaks, north of Memorial Drive, and south of South Colony
  • The Tribute subdivision
  • A portion of the Legends and Northpointe, east of Morningstar and south of North Colony, and north of Memorial Drive
  • To view a map of these areas, click here.

A truck mounted adult mosquito treatment will be conducted in all three of these areas for two consecutive nights (weather permitting), beginning Saturday, Aug. 18, and concluding on Sunday, Aug. 19. If inclement weather prevents the treatments from taking place those nights, the treatments will take place the following night(s). The treatments will begin at approximately 10pm. If you live in close proximity to any of these areas please plan to keep all people and pets indoors overnight, and cover any ponds or pet watering bowls. Additionally, a recent test has indicated a positive pool for West Nile mosquitoes in one other location:

    • Adjacent to the drainage area west of the end of McAfee Drive
Additional testing will take place next week in this location and a second positive test will result in an adult mosquito treatment being applied in that area. Should a second test come back positive, additional information regarding the treatment dates/times will be released to the public.

The City will continue its proactive approach in prevention of mosquito-borne disease sources on public property. However, the best prevention for everyone in the community is through education and personal protection, especially for the elderly and those with health issues, by following the 4 D's listed below:

  • Dress to protect: wear long sleeves and long pants.
  • Dusk and Dawn: avoid being outside at these times if possible.
  • DEET: wear insect repellent with DEET or an effective alternative.
  • Drain standing water: eliminate any water that stands for longer than 5 days or treat water with larvicide according to the label.
  • On Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 7:00 p.m., The Colony will host a public forum on West Nile virus at The Colony Community Center, 5151 North Colony Blvd. The speaker will be a local entomologist, Mr. Patrick Prather of Rid All Pest Control, and he will talk about what The Colony is doing to battle the West Nile virus and the steps that you can take at home to protect yourself and your family and to help the City fight the battle. This session is free and open to all residents of The Colony.
