Dogs get their day; Splash day lets pets enjoy the pool
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
There will be plenty of four-legged visitors frolicking in the Vanston Pool, 2913 Oates Drive, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. The city will host its annual Doggie Splash Day as the city’s pools close for the summer.
“This is a day after the pool is closed so we allow the dogs to play and enjoy swimming in the water. We have a lot of pet owners in Mesquite and this is part of our efforts to cater to our citizens that are dog lovers,” said Alyssa Smith, marketing specialist for the parks and recreation department. “The event creates a setting that dog owners rarely see. It’s really rewarding for dog owners and their pets.”
The city hosts the event at the Vanston Pool because its design and configuration allows dogs of all sizes somewhere to play in the water.
Besides allowing access to the wading pool, a small slide and one-meter diving board, the parks and recreation department will also have a swim suit contest at 9:30 a.m., a dog paddle race at 10:30 a.m. and a diving contest at 11:30 a.m.
“We will divide the diving contest into small dogs and large dogs,” Smith said. “There will be T-shirts and other prizes given away to the contest winners.”
The cost to attend the event is free for dogs but each owner is $5 with a $1 charge for all other spectators. All dogs will be required to show proof of current vaccinations and must be accompanied by a responsible person at least 16 years of age. Aggressive or socially awkward dogs will be asked to leave. Lifeguards will be on duty, so dog owners are invited to swim with their pets, if desired. For more information on Doggie Splash Day visit www.cityofmesquite.com/pard or call 972-216-6260.
Pool season coming to a close
As summer comes to an end, the city’s swimming pools will be closing for the season or reducing hours of operation.
“We have seen a good attendance at our pools this year,” Smith said. “we had a couple of rainy days but overall we have been satisfied with our numbers.”
Vanston Pool will be closing for the season on Friday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. and Town East Pool’s last day of operation will be Sunday, Aug. 12.
“Vanston Pool will be closing first so we can get it ready for Doggie Splash Day,” Smith said.
City Lake Aquatic Center will maintain its current hours of operation through Sunday Aug. 26, then will close from Aug. 27 to 31 and reopen for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1 and 2. The last day that City Lake Aquatic Center will be open is Monday, Sept. 3.
“Since City Lake Aquatic Center is our busiest pool it will stay open through the Labor Day weekend,” Smith said.
There is still one more event planned for City Lake Aquatic Center prior to its closing. The pool will host a movie at the pool event on Friday, Aug. 17. The parks and recreation department will show the movie Soul Surfer and attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the movie and swim.
“This movie event will have a fee to get into the pool. Everyone will be able to swim and watch the movie,” Smith said. “We have seen that people enjoy this event so we keep offering it.”
