New Little Elm Recreation Center hosts two-week Open House

Bored but don't want to deal with the heat outside? Want to work out but Frisco is just too far away? The Town of Little Elm may have just the solution.
The Little Elm Recreation Center opened Thursday for the first time, letting visitors come in and view the new 26,664-square-foot facility, located at 303 Main Street. From Aug. 9-26, the center will be an open house where people can tour the building, have access to the fitness room and full-size gym, and decide if they would like to pursue a membership. Memberships will go on sale Aug. 27.
"It's the first of its kind in Little Elm," said Scott Dunn, Recreation and Senior Center supervisor. "It's a way to give back to the community."
The building features a full-size basketball gym, two volleyball courts, a kitchen, locker rooms with showers and lockers, adult and children classrooms, a multi-purpose room for programming fitness classes, dance classes, parties and more, and an outdoor terrace that overlooks Lewisville Lake.
"My favorite is the outdoor terrace," Tracy Spino, fitness coordinator, said. "It's a place for people for fellowship and enjoying time together. And the view is nice."
The facility also boasts a 2,000-square-foot fitness room that includes cardiovascular equipment such as treadmills, bikes and ellipticals, selectorized weight equipment, plate-loaded/free weights and five flat screen TVs.
Spino said that the only competition in Little Elm for fitness is 24 Hour Fitness--the Recreational Center is the first of its kind in Little Elm.
An outdoor crushed granite walking and jogging trail, known as the Johnny Broyles Nature Trail, is just nearby and leads to Little Elm Park. Dunn hopes that in the future, a triathlon--where competitors swim, bike and run--can be held at the facility with the lake and trail nearby.
The facility will also offer programs such as Zumba, yoga, Pilates, martial arts, boot camps, oil painting classes, nutrition classes, personal training and more. Craft and cooking classes will be offered as well. Programs will begin in October.
In the gym, the center plans to offer basketball and volleyball leagues, free-play basketball and volleyball, homeschool PE programs, and Mommie and Me programs such as Stroller Fit. The center doesn't offer child care, Dunn said, but it will program age-appropriate activities so mothers can come in and use the facility.
The center will continue to partner with The Ryan Project and the Little Elm Area Youth Sports Association to offer more opportunities for area children.
"We're limited on hours, but we can help parents keep kids busy until 10 p.m.," Dunn said. "The goal is to keep Little Elm kids in Little Elm."
Next summer, the center will place emphasis on summer camps and sports performance training.
The facility will also be available for rentals starting this October for small parties, office meetings, wedding receptions and more. Parents can rent the center for birthday parties as well. Rental packages include the multi-purpose room with the attached kitchen and the outdoor terrace or the gym.
"Rentals are going to be a big deal," Dunn said, who has already received several inquiries.
Those who wish to rent the facility do not have to have a membership, but instead prices will be based on resident and non-resident rates with hours and rooms to be rented. A refundable deposit is required.
Membership sales will start on Aug. 27. According to the Town of Little Elm website, membership is determined within the town limits. Those who live outside town limits but have children who attend Little Elm ISD schools are considered non-residents.
When registering, members must present proof of residency such as a current driver's license, utility bill or insurance card at the time of registration before receiving a photo ID. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted.
To understand membership, a youth is considered to be between 2-17 years old, an adult is 18 years and older and a senior is 50 years and older. Family membership is considered for those living in the same address.
Monthly membership fees for Little Elm residents are $15 for youth and seniors, $20 for adult and $45 for family. For non-residents, fees are $25 for youth and seniors, $30 for adults and $70 for family. For a three-month pass, fees are $42 for youth and seniors, $53 for adult and $128 for family. For non-residents, fees are $72 for youth and seniors, $87 for adult and $203 for family.
Annual membership fees for residents are $135 for youth and seniors, $170 for adult and $420 for family. Annual fees for non-residents are $230 for youth and seniors, $255 for adult and $650 for family.
For daily or guest passes to the center, Little Elm residents pay $3 for youth and seniors and $5 for adults. Non-residents must pay $5 for youth and seniors and $7 for adults. College student memberships are available during the summer months and cost $45 for residents. A valid college ID is required for this pass, which is valid from May 15 through Aug. 15.
Youth 11 years old and under must have adult supervision. Those 12 years and older may use the facility as long as they are a member. Youth 12 years old and under may not be in the fitness area, but those between 13-15 years old may use the fitness without active adult supervision.
Youth between 12-15 years old may use the basketball court without supervision. Those who are 16 and 17 years old may use the facility without adult supervision.
The recreation center will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 12-6 p.m. Sunday.
