Firefighters battle major grass fire in Denton County

A major grass fire burned hundreds of acres in Denton County between Pilot Point and Celina on Wednesday. Celina firefighters along with firefighters from about 20 other fire departments helped fight the fire. Though no one was seriously injured, the fire damaged several houses and barns.

Celina firefighters, along with firefighters from at least 20 other agencies, battled a major grass fire Wednesday that blackened at least 500 acres, damaged two barns and several houses. Animals also had to be rescued.
The fire started shortly before noon south of Farm-to-Market Road 455 between Pilot Point and Celina, east of Lake Ray Roberts in Denton County.
Celina Fire Chief Mark Metdker said that the Texas Forestry Service was there along with companies from as far away as Whitesboro.
"It's one of the biggest grass fires I've ever been on," he said.
Though no one knows exactly how the fire started, Metdker said it possibly started from a spark from a malfunctioning hay baler.
He said there were animals rescued but no animals or humans were seriously injured in fighting the fire.
Yesterday was a no-burn day in Collin County.
"If you're using power equipment make sure it's not giving off sparks. Always call the burn line in Collin County and make sure you have a burn permit," Metdker said.
