Back from Austin: Local athletes complete state track meet

With all the Frisco ISD schools represented at this past weekend’s state track meet in Austin, it was Lone Star that shined the brightest.
The Lady Rangers placed in the top-four in five different events, including a second-place finish by Deja Snell in the Class 3A triple jump.
Snell finished with a distance of 11.88 meters and fell just .05 meters behind first-place Trianna McCalister of Monahans.
Snell joined B’Ria Wagner, Brittany Pollard and Joy Spann for that event and the team came in with a time of 3:58.86 to finish two places behind first-place Waco Connally, who posted a 3:54.89.
Snell also took part in the 400-meter dash and earned Lone Star six points after running a 57.18 for third place. Snell was beat out by Connally’s Paula Smith (55.70) and San Antonio Houston’s Tashonna Williams (57.16).
Wagner rounded out Lone Star’s top-three finishers with a third-place showing in the long jump. Wagner jumped 5.44 meters to end behind Connaly’s Smith (5.67) and Big Springs’ Bridgette Tuitt (5.69).
The top finish for a school other than Lone Star came for Frisco’s Ashley Thompson.
The senior competed in the girls Class 4A pole vault event and came home with a bronze medal after posting a third-place 3.81 meters, coming in behind Waco Midway’s Annie Rhodes (3.96) and Fort Worth Boswell’s Laken Taylor (4.03).
Also representing Frisco was Kevin Stephens in the boys triple jump and Stephens finished with a fourth-place distance of 14.12 meters.
For Centennial, it was Ekaete Edohoukwa as the top finisher.
Edohoukwa competed in the girls long jump and finished in fourth place with a distance of 5.48 meters, coming 0.27 meters behind first-place Brianna Richardson of Rockwall-Heath.
Liberty’s Brady Turnbull had a successful showing for the Redhawks and finished in fourth place in the 1600-meter run and fifth place in the 3200.
Meanwhile, Anease Linnear came home to Heritage with a fourth place showing in the girls shot put and joined Wakeland’s Madie Zimmerman, who earned sixth place in the girls 3200 meter run, as the final Frisco ISD athletes that traveled to Austin for the state meet.
With the multiple top finishes by the Lady Rangers, Lone Star ended the meet with a fifth-place finish in the girls team standings. The Lady Rangers ended the weekend with 22 points, with Big Springs earning top honors with 42 points.
