Room to grow: Lady Bobcats fall to Sanger in season opener

CELINA -- After taking its first-ever district championship last season, the Celina volleyball team rolled out a new-look team Tuesday night in their regular season and home opener against Sanger.
With key players such as Amanda Gerths, Kynzie Newman, Danielle Lynn and August Cronin gone this year, the Lady Bobcats are relying on a youth movement and several vital returners to repeat as 10-3A champs.
That youth played into the hands of Sanger during Tuesday night's match, with the Lady Bobcats falling in a four-set affair to begin the season 0-1.
The Lady Bobcats split the first two sets with Sanger before getting behind, 23-15, during the third of a best-of-5 set. A final push that saw Celina score six out of seven points gave the Lady Bobcats a chance at a 2-1 set lead, but Sanger put it away on the next point to come within one set of taking the match.
"I thought we did a good job of scrapping," Coleman said. "Luckily, all the mistakes we made are fixable mistakes."
Sanger began the fourth set in a similar fashion, storming out to a 10-5 lead and eventually going ahead, 21-13.
Much like the previous set though, the Lady Bobcats rallied by taking seven of eight points and cutting the deficit to 22-20. However, the comeback ultimately fell short and Sanger earned a 25-20 victory in the final set to take the match 3-1.
"Sanger has a good team," Coleman said. "We should get a lot better as the season goes along though."
Coleman mentioned his team's movement as one area that needs improvement before hitting the court again.
"The timing and transition from offense to defense needs some work," he said. "There is too much standing around right now."
With early-season rust still an issue for many teams, the minor problems shouldn't be a factor for Celina much longer.
"It's nothing we can't fix," Coleman said.
The Lady Bobcats are set to resume regular season action Friday with a 5 p.m. match against Denison. The team will first take part in the Collin County Spike Fest Thursday through Saturday in Anna and Melissa.
"We're young up and down the board so that's a good thing," Coleman said.
