Buckner, Nwachukwu on watch list

Dan Buckner and Uzoma Nwachukwu, Allen alumni, are on the Biletnikoff Award watch list.

The award is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate receiver, with the preseason watch list boasting 48 names up for initial consideration.

Nwachukwu enters his senior year at Texas A&M after a junior campaign in which he hauled in 50 catches for 639 yards and two touchdowns. Buckner, a senior at Arizona, will enjoy his second season with the Wildcats after transferring from Texas. As a junior, Buckner nabbed 606 yards and two touchdowns on 42 receptions.

Celina's summer track club is coached by Allen Williams III, Chandra Richardson, Tyrone Brown, Dewey Williams and Chris Lott.

Gravley named Coach of Year

Fresh off leading Allen girls golf to a Class 5A State Championship, Lady Eagles head coach Karen Gravley has another accolade to celebrate.

And this one reaches further than just Texas.

A five-time district coach of the year, three-time North Texas High School Golf Coaches Association Coach of the Year and 2007 Southwest Region Coach of the Year, Gravley can add National High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year to her resume.

“I am extremely blessed to be a part of this program,” Gravley said, “and humbled by the support that the parents, [athletic director Steve Williams], the Allen ISD administration, our home course pro staffs and the Allen community give the kids every day.”

This award is not surprising given her success.

Coming to Allen in 1992, Gravley led the Lady Eagles to state titles in 2005, 2006 and 2012).

The most recent title was a dominating effort as the team of two seniors, four sophomores and a freshman won district by 60 strokes and state by 11.

State VB moving to Garland

The UIL Volleyball State Championships are moving to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.

The tournament had been at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos since 2000.

“The Culwell Center is a first-class venue and we believe it will serve as a tremendous host,” said Dr. Mark Cousins, UIL athletic director. “We look forward to working closely with Garland ISD in creating a great experience for the schools, fans and students involved.”

The state tourney is set for Nov. 15-17.

“UIL championship events make memories that last a lifetime,” said Dr. Curtis Culwell, Garland ISD Superintendent. “Garland ISD is privileged to host this premiere championship event.”

Lovejoy has won four straight state volleyball titles.

Tripucka selected for All-American game

Long touted by scouts as one of the top punters in the nation, Allen senior Shane Tripucka solidified that status Tuesday as he was selected for the 2013 Under Armour High School All-American game.

“This is a huge honor,” said Chris Tripucka, Shane’s father, “and as you can imagine, Shane is quite excited.”

The game will take place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., in January.

Tripucka received the call from ESPN just before traveling to Lubbock to visit Texas Tech. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound punter, recently named a 4.5-star prospect by Chris Sailer Kicking, is still seeking out where to continue his career in college.
