Americans sign Ludwig

Defenseman Trevor Ludwig will return for a second campaign with the Allen Americans.

The team announced the signing of Ludwig Friday, bolstering a defensive core that resigned Mike Berube not long before.

Ludwig played just 13 games for the Americans last season, due to AHL call-ups and a season-ending injury.

A spot in the AHL is nothing new for the defender, whose career has included stops in Texas, Norfolk, Manitoba and Iowa over the past five years.

“I’m excited to be part of the Allen Americans organization again,” Ludwig said. “They made some positive changes in the front office and coaching that are big steps in the right direction. Mr. Miller has always wanted this to be as close to an NHL atmosphere as possible and I know those additions will improve that image.”

AAYBA champs call McKinney home

The McKinney-based Twins-Benhardt 9-and-under team won the AAYBA Texas World Series Platinum Championship last Saturday in Flower Mound with an 11-4 trouncing of defending champs the Broncos de Zapata.

The Twins undefeated (8-0) run at the tournament included wins against the Lake City Bandits, Rattlers and Fast Center 45’s during pool play. After advancing to the platinum bracket, they remained perfect with wins against Coppell Red, Frozen Ropes Elite, the top-seeded Dallas Tigers-South and the Prosper Crush, who they beat 8-7 to advance to the championship game.

Gravley named Coach of Year

Fresh off leading Allen girls golf to a Class 5A State Championship, Lady Eagles head coach Karen Gravley has another accolade to celebrate.

And this one reaches further than just Texas.

A five-time district coach of the year, three-time North Texas High School Golf Coaches Association Coach of the Year and 2007 Southwest Region Coach of the Year, Gravley can add National High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year to her resume.

“I am extremely blessed to be a part of this program,” Gravley said, “and humbled by the support that the parents, [athletic director Steve Williams], the Allen ISD administration, our home course pro staffs and the Allen community give the kids every day.”

This award is not surprising given her success.

Coming to Allen in 1992, Gravley led the Lady Eagles to state titles in 2005, 2006 and 2012).

The most recent title was a dominating effort as the team of two seniors, four sophomores and a freshman won district by 60 strokes and state by 11.

State VB moving to Garland

The UIL Volleyball State Championships are moving to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.

The tournament had been at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos since 2000.

“The Culwell Center is a first-class venue and we believe it will serve as a tremendous host,” said Dr. Mark Cousins, UIL athletic director. “We look forward to working closely with Garland ISD in creating a great experience for the schools, fans and students involved.”

The state tourney is set for Nov. 15-17.

“UIL championship events make memories that last a lifetime,” said Dr. Curtis Culwell, Garland ISD Superintendent. “Garland ISD is privileged to host this premiere championship event.”

Lovejoy has won four straight state volleyball titles.

Nightingale, Rehring swim at Trials

Before so much as beginning her college swimming career, Lovejoy alum Emily Nightingale got a taste of the highest level of competition her sport has to offer.

The ex-Lady Leopard competed in the 200-meter backstroke Saturday at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb.

Slotted among 190 swimmers from across the nation, Nightingale finished 148th overall with a time of 2:21.08 – 14.96 seconds behind eventual race winner and Olympic qualifier Missy Franklin.

Also making her Trials debut was Allen alum and Texas A&M senior Jaclin Rehring, who placed 102nd in the 200 butterfly.

Seeded in the event’s third heat, Rehring raced to a 2:19.26.
