Shorthanded: L.A. beats FC Dallas without star players
BY Chris O’Dell, codell@starlocalnews.com
With the Galaxy missing star players David Beckham and Landon Donovan, FC Dallas couldn’t take advantage of its shorthanded opponent Saturday night in Frisco.
L.A. earned a 1-0 victory after a second-half goal from Mike Magee gave the Galaxy three points and secured a spot in the MLS playoff race.
Magee found the back of the net in the 62nd minute just moments after a chance from Dallas’ Scott Sealy was denied by goalkeeper Josh Saunders. Magee then received a pass from the left side and blasted a shot from the top of the penalty area that Dallas goalie Kevin Hartman couldn’t stop despite a diving effort.
Jackson’s shot bounced just wide of the left post though, ending any chance at the home team coming away from FC Dallas Stadium with a draw.
The defending MLS champion Galaxy (10-10-3) extended their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) with the win and have lost just twice in the last 10 matches, going 7-2-1 in that stretch.
L.A. was without the services of its two star players after Donovan sat out after being suspended for the first time in his MLS career for yellow card accumulation and Beckham was absent after participating in the opening ceremonies at the London Olympics.
Donovan and Beckham weren’t the only star players to miss Saturday’s game, as Dallas’ Brek Shea sat out for the second consecutive contest after arguing with head coach Schellas Hyndman when he was taken out of a July 18 loss against San Jose.
Shea has just three goals in 14 games this year after scoring 11 last season and becoming a finalist for the MLS MVP. The midfielder did return to practice this week but was left off the roster once again Saturday.
Dallas was sporting its new jerseys with the logo of their new sponsor AdvoCare on the chest. The team will be back in action with the new uniforms Sunday with a road match against Portland after the team earned a 5-0 victory over the Timbers in a July 21 meeting at FC Dallas Stadium.
FC Dallas will then return home for an Aug. 11 game against Colorado.
