Frisco falls in extra innings

After taking the series opener against Midland Tuesday night, the RoughRiders couldn’t make it two straight victories on Wednesday, dropping a 6-5 contest in 12 innings.

Frisco, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, scored three first-inning runs after outfielder Engel Beltre led off with a triple to right field.

The lead widened to four runs during the fifth inning before Midland mounted a comeback with four runs in the sixth.

After trading runs in the eighth, including a home run from Mike Olt, the game went into extra innings before the Rockhounds scored a run in the 12th inning to ultimately earn the victory.

The two teams were slated for a rubber game Thursday night. However, results were not available as of press time.

Following the game, the RoughRiders will begin a 10-game road trip with the first four in San Antonio.

UIL steroid testing results

The UIL has released its annual Anabolic Steroid Testing Report for tests conducted between September 2011 and May 2012.

During that span, 3,311 tests were conducted and confirmed nine positive results and two protocol positives, which stem from a student-athlete violating the UIL steroid-testing protocol. One resulted from a student not reporting for testing and one was the result of a substituted specimen.

In addition, 217 schools were tested which included 3,087 boys across 11 sports and 224 girls over 10 sports. The sports with the most tests conducted were football (1,366) and volleyball (30) for boys and girls, respectively.

The testing spanned grade levels 9-12, with 1,045 senior student-athletes topping the scale.

State VB moving to Garland

The UIL Volleyball State Championships are moving to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.

The tournament had been at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos since 2000.

“The Culwell Center is a first-class venue and we believe it will serve as a tremendous host,” said Dr. Mark Cousins, UIL athletic director. “We look forward to working closely with Garland ISD in creating a great experience for the schools, fans and students involved.”

The state tourney is set for Nov. 15-17.

“UIL championship events make memories that last a lifetime,” said Dr. Curtis Culwell, Garland ISD Superintendent. “Garland ISD is privileged to host this premiere championship event.”

Lovejoy has won four straight state volleyball titles.
