So long District 10-5A, McKinney Boyd will miss you.
The Broncos spent the past two seasons transforming themselves from a fledgling Class 5A program into a serious contender across the athletic spectrum. They put together their best season on record in a number of sports and compiled a steady stream of district championships and playoff appearances in their time as the odd man out in a district otherwise comprised of Garland ISD schools.
Yes, the Broncos will remain in the same district next season, but they'll be surrounded by new players. The teams that made their initial time in 10-5A so pleasant will be replaced by more difficult opponents such as Plano Senior, Plano East, Plano West and Allen – which rank among the largest schools in the state. How they'll fare against these new district rivals is yet to be seen, but they won't be hurting for confidence after their recent accomplishments.
The change to a new district for the 2010-12 seasons affected the Broncos immediately and most dramatically in football. In two years in 10-5A, they posted consecutive 6-1 district campaigns, made the playoffs each season and won their inaugural district championship.
Similar success took place across the athletic department, with equally dramatic results coming on the softball field, where the Lady Broncos turned a similar two-year run in 8-5A – winning just one district game and posting a 1-19 record – into a perfect district campaign this past season. They also made the playoffs each season they were in 10-5A and won their first district title and playoff game.
The Broncos’ winning percentage also rose, and rose dramatically, in every other major team sport after the district switch. Only one season from their 8-5A years was better than a corresponding 10-5A season: the Lady Broncos basketball team's 6-4 district season in 2008, which beat the 7-7 mark they posted this past season.
By the numbers, the winning percentages compiled by the volleyball (8-5A: .500, 10-5A: .964), boys basketball (8-5A: .041, 10-5A: .392), girls basketball (8-5A: .400, 10-5A: .642), boys soccer (8-5A: .541, 10-5A: .910), girls soccer (8-5A: .750, 10-5A: .980) and baseball (8-5A: .458, 10-5A: .785) teams all increased in the shift between districts.
The widespread nature of those improvements suggests the level of competition was largely responsible, but the Broncos also found success beyond their district. The past two years also saw them win a state championship – the 2011 girls soccer title – and make an additional state finals appearance, where the Lady Broncos volleyball team lost to Coppell in the 2012 title game.
Those teams should continue at a high level of play regardless of the district they're placed in, but the Broncos as a whole could find it difficult to continue the pace they established the past two seasons. The step up in competition that coincides with the new school year will make it difficult, to say the least, but time will tell if the athletic department as a whole has truly turned the corner.
