Texas Tech names JPII's Katie Hensle as women's hoops assistant coach

Published: Saturday, June 9, 2012 9:42 AM CDT
After spending the past four seasons molding the John Paul II girls basketball team into one of the state's top TAPPS units, Katie Hensle will test her hand at the college game.

The now former head coach of the Lady Cardinals has been named an assistant coach for the Texas Tech women's basketball team.

"I am very excited for the opportunity to join such a quality program," Hensle said, "and to work with a great staff led by a head coach committed to excellence on and off the court."

An athletics program still on the rise at John Paul, Hensle has been one of the pillars to the school's success during her tenure with the Lady Cardinals. Capping her career at John Paul with an overall record of 107-39, Hensle and the Lady Cardinals are fresh off two consecutive seasons that ended in the TAPPS 5A State Tournament.

In 2011, the Lady Cardinals advanced to the State Championship Game for the first time in program history, finishing as state runner-up to Argyle Liberty Christian.

Last season, John Paul advanced to the State Semifinals where it fell to eventual state champion Ursuline.

Prior to leading the Lady Cardinals, Hensle held assistant coach posts at both Dallas Lutheran (2001-05) and McKinney (2005-08).

As a member of the Lady Raiders' staff, Hensle will work primarily with point guards while having a hand in scouting and recruiting.

"Katie's experiences on the high school and club level give her a unique perspective that can impact our recruiting in the state of Texas and beyond," said Kristy Curry, Texas Tech head coach. "She is a tireless worker and great role model who will be a great complement to the staff we have in place. Katie has had players go on to compete in the Big 12, SEC, Big East, Pac 12, Atlantic 10, Conference USA, Southland and WAC, so she understands what it takes to develop and mentor young women to compete at the highest levels."
