Coppell PD launches new crime mapping software
By Marthe Stinton, mstinton@starlocalnews.com
Looking for a way to spot heavy crime areas in the city? The Coppell Police Department just launched a mapping program to do just that either online, via e-mail or even through a new iPhone application.
Coppell PD launched an online crime mapping system to help residents get a better idea of criminal activity in their area. The department hopes the map will help residents stay safe and increase their awareness of crime and crime trends.
The Bair Analytics's public crime map, Raids Online, services several cities throughout the country and automatically alerts the public about recent crime activity. The service aims to improve communication between the public and local law enforcement through tips and also aims to protect resident's privacy by allowing anonymous tips.
The mapping software was acquired in conjunction with the Citizen Observer tip411 public safety alert and anonymous tip software package recently put to use by Coppell PD, according to a press release.
"At the Coppell Police Department, our belief is that an informed citizenry can reduce crime and improve public safety by partnering with us," Captain Shawn Fullagar said. "Providing the crime map is one of our efforts to enhance this partnership. Our hope is that the crime map empowers our citizens by providing them with the information they need to make better decisions about crime and how we can best diminish it together."
For those interested in viewing the crime map, visit www.ci.coppell.tx.us/police-main. The crime map can also be accessed at raidsonline.com. While the functions of the crime map are easy to understand, instructions on how to use the program can be found on both the Coppell Police Department's webpage and the Raids Online home page.
