Runoff election: Mays, Garcia hit the campaign trail

Published: Friday, June 15, 2012 1:40 PM CDT
Campaigns for the runoff election for city council place 3 between Wes Mays and Greg Garcia are underway. During the primary election, Mays took the lead with 40 percent of the votes but there was only an 87 vote difference between the two candidates.

Mays said he is continuing his campaigning efforts and is seeing more acceptance due to the amount of votes he received. He is continuing to stress the same basic principals he espoused during the primary election and believes his status as a first-time candidate will help his chances of getting elected.

"Citizens are excited to have me serve as a first time candidate," he said. "New candidates bring in new ideas and I want to be part of that. Citizens want new ideas and fresh approaches; they are thrilled to hear that I've never held elected office and that I will bring a new vision to the council."

Mays said he listened to city residents during the initial campaign and his message continues to be well received as residents indicate a desire for more communication from the city.

"I have proposed community roundtables to provide that [communication]," he said. "I've been keeping myself abreast of the city business by attending city council meetings, budget meetings and community affairs so that I will be prepared to step into the position immediately. I've also met with early morning coffee fellowships, breakfast clubs and community organizations; they have overwhelmed me with their support.

City surveys show residents of Coppell are happy with the amenities that the city provides, Mays said. The city must ensure that it has the future revenue base to support the standard of living that citizens enjoy.

"The Coppell 2030 Plan has been well received by the community; now the city must be fiscally responsible in the implementation of that plan so that a tax rate increase would not be necessary," he said. "We will need to investigate long-term strategies to create income producing properties on the Cypress Waters North Lake properties to ensure long term property values are maintained. In addition, we need to address the needs of our senior citizens by making the city mobility friendly."

Mays has also received support from an unlikely source -- an opposing candidate.

"I've received overwhelming support from the community," Mays said. "I was honored to have received Margaret Lyck's endorsement. I enjoy having people waive and honk their horns when they see me putting out my signs."

Garcia, who garnered 37 percent of the votes, said he is more focused now that the race has slimed to just two candidates.

"I'm excited about being in a runoff," Garcia said. "My hat goes off to Wes for his hard work and dedication. Now that my oldest has graduated, there are no more distractions and I can focus on reaching out in person to as many people as possible. I appreciate all the voters that came out during the general election but I think it's important that citizens get out and vote on June 23."

Garcia said he did not find any areas of his campaign or campaign platform in need of alteration after the first election.

"I think the voter turn out could have been a little higher and my focus now is to encourage voters to take the time to vote," he said. " I realize that many citizens will be out of town on vacation so I'm reminding them that early voting starts June 11. "

Garcia said his goals remain focused on maintaining the quality of life Coppell residents have worked hard to establish.

"There needs be continued development that is consistent with the 2030 plan that was adopted by council and the development needs to be the requests of our community," he said. "At the same, we need be fiscally responsible."

Garcia is seeing additional support to his existing constituents and is excited to see those results.

"It's been great," he said. "I have had a great deal of support from a lot of my constituents and others that have stepped forward asking how they can help or what they can do for my campaign. I'm excited about the opportunity and I look forward to June 23."
