Town news: Flower Mound Police alert residents to utility bill scam
From staff reports
The Flower Mound Police Department is informing residents about a new nation-wide identity theft scam claiming Americans can receive federal financial assistance for utility bill costs.
According to the Texas Attorney General’s Office, scammers are using in-person solicitations, social media, fliers, phone calls, and text messages to contact customers, claiming a new federal program established by President Obama’s administration is providing free utility bill payment credits or offering to apply payments on customers’ behalf.
To take advantage of the fictitious program, utility customers are told they must provide their Social Security number and their bank routing number. Victims who provide this sensitive personal information are given a so-called “Federal Reserve Bank routing number” to pay their utility bills.
QR Code implementation allows restaurant-goers to conveniently view food scores
In order to provide a fast and convenient way to access local restaurant food health inspection scores, the Flower Mound Environmental Health Services Division has implemented a QR Code on all health permits.
By policy, a dining establishment’s health permit must be displayed in a public area accessible to patrons.
Restaurant-goers can scan the QR Code with their Smart Phones, which will direct them to the town’s food inspections score page. From there, customers can access the current food inspection scores. Users must have Adobe Reader to view the scores. The implementation of the QR Code is another incentive for food service establishments to practice safe food-handling and all-around proper food service techniques to ensure the health of our community.
