Najera headed to Frisco

Former Dallas Mavericks forward Eduardo Najera is retiring from the NBA and will soon head to Frisco.

Najera has accepted an offer to become the new head coach of the NBA D-League’s Texas Legends and also a part owner of the team.

Mavericks president of basketball operations and Legends co-owner Donnie Nelson also offered Najera a position working in the Mavericks’ front office.

The 36-year-old Najera will take over head coaching duties from Del Harris after playing his last season with the Charlotte Bobcats.

Najera played 12 seasons in the NBA after being taken by the Houston Rockets on the Mavericks’ behalf during the 2000 NBA draft. The forward became the first Mexican-born player to be drafted by an NBA team and will become the first Mexican-born coach in either the NBA or its D-league.

High schools on Pay Per View

Two of the top high school football teams in the country will be coming to Frisco for a game that will be seen by plenty of eyes.

Dallas Skyline and The Woodlands will square off in the North Texas Football Classic during a Sept. 1 game from FC Dallas Stadium.

The contest will become the first high school football game in the country that will allow college coaches and recruiters out of state to watch the game via a live broadcast for a fee on Sportsgram.net.

The game will be a rematch of the 2011 postseason game that saw Skyline prevail for a four-point victory.

“This preseason game will look and feel like a championship game,” said John Weaver, event organizer. “They’re great athletes and great kids who will bring their A game for all to see before the season starts.”

Modano to be enshrined in Dallas

Mike Modano’s journey to be enshrined into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame will be a short one.

The Allen Americans minority owner, and former Dallas Stars standout, will be inducted into the Class of 2012 on the ice at the Plaza of the Americas in Dallas.

Modano, Lou Lamoriello and Ed Olczyk are being inducted this year.

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is in Eveleth, Minn., but inductions have rotated across cities for several years.

In addition to being a staple of the Minnesota North Stars and then Dallas Stars franchise, Modano is the NHL’s American-born leader in goals, points, playoff points and games played.

Owens signs with Seattle

Following a short-lived stint with the Allen Wranglers, Terrell Owens signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old, ex-Wrangler was signed for $925,000 – the NFL’s veteran minimum.

Owens previously served as a player and co-owner for the Wranglers in an IFL career that spanned eight games, during which the wide out recorded 35 catches for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Wranglers released Owens in February, citing his unwillingness to play in a late-season road trip and missing an appearance at a children’s hospital.

Owens, entering his 16th NFL season, is second in league history in receiving yards (15,934), fourth in touchdowns (156) and sixth in receptions (1,078).

UIL steroid testing results

The UIL has released its annual Anabolic Steroid Testing Report for tests conducted between September 2011 and May 2012.

During that span, 3,311 tests were conducted and confirmed nine positive results and two protocol positives, which stem from a student-athlete violating the UIL steroid-testing protocol. One resulted from a student not reporting for testing and one was the result of a substituted specimen.

In addition, 217 schools were tested which included 3,087 boys across 11 sports and 224 girls over 10 sports. The sports with the most tests conducted were football (1,366) and volleyball (30) for boys and girls, respectively.

The testing spanned grade levels 9-12, with 1,045 senior student-athletes topping the scale.
