Eurotrip: Americans sign Italian League’s Schaafsma
BY Kevin Hageland, khageland@starlocalnews.com
Last season, the Allen Americans lost Chris Whitley to a club in Scotland.
In addition to bringing back their goaltender for 2012-13, Allen has reached out overseas to sign a new player as the club inked forward James Schaafsma to a deal Friday.
“James is a highly skilled player,” said Steve Martinson, Americans head coach. “He will be a top player on our team and one of the top players in the league.”
Schaafsma is the 12th Americans player under contract for the upcoming season with the team previously signing Whitley, Trevor and Tyler Ludwig, Darryl Bootland, Jason Deitsch, Brian McMillin, Jarret Lukin, Nino Musitelli, Mike Berube, Brad Gallant and Chris Doyle.
Modano to be enshrined in Dallas
Mike Modano’s journey to enter the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame will be a short one.
The Americans’ minority owner, and former Dallas Stars standout, will be inducted into the Class of 2012 on Oct. 15 at the ice at the Plaza of the Americas in Dallas.
Modano, Lou Lamoriello and Ed Olczyk are being inducted this year.
The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is in Eveleth, Minn., but inductions have rotated across cities for several years.
In addition to being a staple of the Minnesota North Stars and then Dallas Stars franchise, Modano is the NHL’s American-born leader in goals, points, playoff points and games played.
