A Family Affair: Ludwig clan now fully reunited in Allen

Published: Friday, July 20, 2012 5:27 PM CDT
When Craig Ludwig was brought on as a minority owner with the Allen Americans a little more than two months ago, he had a clear message.

"This team has been close (to a CHL title) before, but close doesn't cut it," he said. "We are here for one reason and one reason only, and that's to win a championship in this league."

Ludwig can now add family reunion as another reason for him being in Allen.

That's because shortly after Craig's son Tyler Ludwig announced he would be back with the Americans for the 2012-13 season, twin Trevor Ludwig (also a defenseman) has been inked for the upcoming season as well.

"I'm excited to be part of the Allen Americans organization again," Trevor said. "They made some positive changes in the front office and coaching staff that are big steps in the right direction. (Majority team owner Doug) Miller has always wanted this to be as close to an NHL atmosphere as possible and I know those additions will improve that image."

These signings will present a new dynamic for Craig.

"I enjoy watching my sons play hockey as a father," he said. "It will be interesting for me to watch them as a father and member of the front office, but I'm looking forward to it."

He isn't alone.

"I'm looking forward to getting back on the ice and doing what I love to do," Trevor said. "It's a rare thing in hockey to be able to play with a family member, so it's always a bonus to be able to skate on the ice with my twin brother."

Craig and his sons celebrated the signings Wednesday by hosting an Evening with the Ludwigs at BJ's Restaurant in Allen.

The celebration, however, hasn't strictly been about getting the family back together.

The Americans have legitimate reason to be excited about the pair of defensemen, who both played for Allen last season and were previously teammates with the North American Hockey League's Texas Tornado (2002-04) and AHL's Texas Stars (2009-10).

Trevor, who has played 140 games at the AHL level, only took the ice 13 times for Allen last season due to call-ups and a season-ending injury. During that time he posted 2 goals, 1 assist and +1 while racking up 9 penalty minutes. His brother Tyler was a more consistent force for the Americans' blue line as he saw action in 64 games and accumulated 28 points (4 goals, 24 assists). Tyler also posted a +21 while amassing 41 penalty minutes.

The twins will no doubt look to make the Americans better while also trying to follow in the footsteps of their father, who won two college national titles before playing in the NHL for 17 seasons and winning Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadians and Dallas Stars.
