Make A Difference Day set for Oct. 27

Published: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 5:12 PM CDT
Make a Difference Day is scheduled for Oct. 27, and all local nonprofit organizations and tax-supported groups are invited to participate, said Dana Riley, executive director of Volunteer McKinney.

Those who submit project proposals by Sept. 3 could receive a $200 grant to help fund the project.

All projects are to begin at 9 a.m. and be completed by 2 p.m. Oct. 27.

Project proposals should be submitted via email to dana.riley@volunteermckinney.org, and should include the following information: the name and address of the nonprofit or group, a brief description of services, the name and brief description of the proposed project, the project location and the number of volunteers needed.

The project proposal should also indicate whether the proposed project is a family-friendly project, whether it can accommodate volunteers with disabilities and whether the non-profit or group is currently registered as an agency at www.volunteermckinney.org.

The project proposal should also state what the impact of the proposal would be on the agency, clients or community.

"Participating in this year's Make A Difference Day will give your agency the opportunity to engage new volunteers and showcase the work you do in the community," Riley said.

Make A Difference Day is celebrated each year on the fourth Saturday in October. The nation's largest day of volunteering was created by USA Weekend magazine and is supported by HandsOn Network and Newman's Own, an organization that will give $10,000 to the national award winner.

A $10,000 All-Star Award, funded by the Gannett Foundation and USA Weekend, will go to a former national honoree who shows continued excellence in volunteerism.

USA Weekend will feature 10 national and three city award honorees in a special April 2013 issue, coinciding with National Volunteer Week, led by Points of Light Institute. Winners will receive their awards later in April at an event in Washington, D.C.
