Cross country season begins
With the 2012-13 varsity athletics calendar firing up, another leg of cross country season is under way.
All three Plano ISD teams competed Saturday around the Metroplex, with the Plano East boys and girls opening their season at separate meets. The boys took to the course at Oak Grove Park for the Southlake Carroll 8-Mile Relay while the Lady Panthers were on hand for the Frisco Invitational at Warren Park.
There was familiar competition at both, with the Plano Senior boys also partaking in the Carroll relay while Plano West was in action at the Frisco meet.
All three will clash at 6:30 a.m. Saturday from Jasper High School for the Plano ISD Invitational.
Planoite earns championship berth
The Texas Golf Association announced that Plano native Lucas Boyd will represent Texas in the 2012 USGA Men's State Team Championship.
The tournament is Sept. 19-21 at Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. President of the Texas Golf Association, Guy Mason, will captain the team with Boyd joined by Aaron Hickman (Tyler) and Clarke Kincaid (Trophy Club).
The team is based on points from TGA and USGA national championships the last two years. Hickman was the top point getter (4,740), followed by Boyd (3,000) and Kincaid (2,850).
The format for the Men's State Team Championship is three stroke-play rounds. The two lowest scores from each team are used for each round. The team with the lowest aggregate score after 54 holes is the champion.
10-5A football predictions
With the start of football season, which begins Thursday, comes the start of football predictions.
Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine is at the forefront of those prognostications.
DCTF made its 10-5A rankings for 2012 and has Allen hoisting the district crown for a seventh straight season. The Eagles, who feature the Preseason Defensive MVP in senior linebacker Nick Cobb, are trailed by Plano East, McKinney Boyd and Plano Senior. The Broncos have the district's Preseason Offensive MVP in senior running back Bryan Driskell.
The publication does not have Plano West (fifth) or McKinney (sixth) making the playoffs.
Goodloe out, Pryor in at Plano
For the second straight year, Plano Senior is getting a new wrestling head coach.
Clay Goodloe was at the helm for one season, but is departing for the same position at Carrolton Creekview. Ironically enough, Creekview is involved with the Wildcats' new head coach as well as Jay Pryor, who started the Mustangs' program when the school opened, is taking over at Plano.
Pryor was previously the wrestling coach at Sand Springs Public Schools in Sand Springs, Okla.

Swing Fore Yellow
Swing Fore Yellow, one of the pillars in the 4 Yellow Foundation's contributions to LIVESTRONG in the global fight against cancer, is coming to town.
A staple in Plano native Lance Armstrong's organization since 2009, the golf tournament will be held Sept. 23-24 at Gleneagles Country Club.
The festivities commence with a cocktail party Sept. 23 at III Forks Restaurant that will include live and silent auctions. The tournament will be held the following day and includes a round of golf as well as a continental breakfast and buffet luncheon.
The proceeds go to benefit the LIVESTRONG Foundation and Heroes for Children.
Burkhead on watch list
Plano Senior alum, and Nebraska senior, Rex Burkhead is on the Doak Walker Award watch list.
The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate running back, with the preseason watch list boasting 52 names up for initial consideration.
Burkhead, a semifinalist for the award in 2011, is coming off a junior campaign with the Cornhuskers where he established career highs across the board. The former Wildcat ran for 1,357 yards and 15 touchdowns in addition to hauling in 21 receptions for 177 yards and two scores.
The winner will be announced Dec. 6.
Burkhead, who won the 2012 Rare Disease Champion Award, is also a nominee for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in part because of his work with 6 year old Jack Hoffman.
UIL steroid testing results
The UIL has released its annual Anabolic Steroid Testing Report for tests conducted between September 2011 and May 2012.
During that span, 3,311 tests were conducted and confirmed nine positive results and two protocol positives, which stem from a student-athlete violating the UIL steroid-testing protocol. One resulted from a student not reporting for testing and one was the result of a substituted specimen.
In addition, 217 schools were tested which included 3,087 boys across 11 sports and 224 girls over 10 sports. The sports with the most tests conducted were football (1,366) and volleyball (30) for boys and girls, respectively.
The testing spanned grade levels 9-12, with 1,045 senior student-athletes topping the scale.
ACT to hold golf tourney
The Achievement Center of Texas is holding its sixth annual golf tournament Sept. 10 at Prestonwood Country Club.
The event kicks off with an 8 a.m. shotgun start and is open to foursomes. The tournament will be hosted by SMU and NBA alum Ira Terrell, with other professional athletes and celebrities set to attend. Sponsorship levels span six pay grades, running from $5,000 for five foursomes and a choice of five celebrities to $150 for a single player to be placed with three others on a team.
The event benefits students of ACT, a training program for children and adults with disabilities.

Wolves add to swim staff
The Plano West swim team bolstered its coaching staff this week with the arrival of Lena Guarriello as an assistant.
Guarriello last headed up the swim program at Tulane before resigning from her position earlier this week to join the Wolves' staff as an assistant and teach physical education at Mitchell Elementary.
She served as Tulane's head coach for the past three seasons after maintaining an assistant gig with the team from 2004-06. During her stay as head coach, Guarriello helped pace the Green Wave to records in eight events and her squad combined for 156 lifetime-best performances.
As an assistant, she was instrumental in Tulane's Conference USA Championship in 2005.
