In their first home match of the season, the McKinney volleyball team gave their supporters a mixed but winning performance Tuesday with a four-set victory over Richardson Berkner (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 25-14) that extended their winning streak to five matches.
“I kind of felt like it was a little bit of home-game jitters,” said Jessica Camp, McKinney head coach. “I don’t think we played as well as we could have, but we’re still fixing some of our problem areas and hopefully we’ll get those worked out before district.”
The win kept the Lionettes (6-2 on the season) rolling after claiming the consolation bracket Saturday at the Denton Ryan Kick-Off Classic. After opening the tournament Friday with a loss against Red Oak, the Lionettes reeled off four consecutive wins: sweeping Monterrey, Denison and Lake Dallas and earning a 3-1 decision against Pilot Point.
The Lake Dallas match was the Lionettes’ final match and their best of the tournament. They combined a relentless attack with error-free execution across the court to close their two-day performance at Denton Ryan on a strong note.
Continuing on a rapid start to her varsity career, freshman outside hitter Claire Embry brought home all-tournament honors.
“We never let up, we just kept going,” Camp said. “Everyone was doing their part and everyone was working hard.”
McKinney North also took part in the Denton Ryan tournament, going 2-3 overall with wins against Little Elm (19-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-17) and Sherman (25-12, 25-16, 25-21), and losses against Denton (25-18, 25-22, 25-13), Denton Guyer (25-22, 9-25, 25-19, 25-12) and Rudder (20-25, 25-18, 25-11, 24-26, 18-16). The Lady Bulldogs were swept by Frisco Wakeland on Tuesday (25-12, 25-21, 25-20) to move to 3-6 on the season.
The Lionettes will return to action Friday when they open pool play at the Allen Texas Open against Amarillo at 10:15 a.m at Allen High School. The tournament’s 32-team field also features all of McKinney's new district rivals: Allen, Plano Senior, Plano West, Plano East and McKinney Boyd, which will be looking to rebound after being swept by Flower Mound (25-21, 26-24, 25-20) on Tuesday.
McKinney will open the tournament in a pool with Amarillo, Lovejoy and Coronado.
